In today's episode, Lucian Ravenmad relates to the Master of Elfhame an unedifying tale of a Curse that haunts the Chequers team -- one that has a direct tie to the investigation he is undertaking. So much so, that he defies one of the Marshal's orders...
It should be noted that baseball has many stories of "curses" allegedly put on teams for one reason or another. Among them are: (1) "The Curse of the Bambino," in which the Red Sox, after trading Babe Ruth prior to the 1920 season, were supposed to not win another World Series, which they didn't for over 80 years; (2) "The Black Sox Curse," in which the White Sox were said not to win another series after members of their team threw the 1919 World Series, which they didn't also for another 80+ years (ironically, the year after the Sox); (3) "The Billy Goat Curse," in which a bar owner, after being denied entry for his pet goat (!) to one of the Cubs' 1945 World Series games, slapped a curse on them that they'd never be in another World Series, which lasted for 71 years. There's another one in Japan involving a team whose curse derives from a statue of Colonel Harlan Sanders being thrown into a river. I kid you not, as Jack Paar would have said.
