Remember they live on a colony world--most of the local vegetation looks Earth-like but has a different biochemistry so growing beef from a cow is very expensive because of land you have to clear and replant with Terrestrial plants, bacteria, and buggies. Sheep have the same issue. Chickens and pigs are easier to raise.
