Chapter 45: Filling in the Blank
Back in the church Kate slipped the gown back on, it was a bit awkward getting her wings through even though it had an open back, but she managed. Mary at least wasn’t as panic-bowing anymore though she was still averting her eyes from looking directly at Kate.
“Ok I’m decent, and it seems you are too, so let’s try this again without the panicking” Kate said.
“Right” Mary nodded still shifting a bit nervously, “So... I’m Mary, I said… and you… uh. You said you had questions? I can’t imagine I could know anything that one such as you does not.”
“Don’t sell yourself short. I’m not all knowing or anything, and what I need filled in is mostly recent events.” Kate sat in a pew, “And if I may, I assume you have questions too, so lets take turns.”
“Oh… ok…” Mary sat too keeping some distance from Kate, “Would I be worthy of the sort of revelations that you could impart.”
“Not to disappoint, but I probably have fewer revelations to impart than you are assuming.” Kate shrugged, “but considering you know about me already I might as well answer your questions.”
Kate shifted in her seat, turning sideways to look at Mary more directly, “So that was your first question, here’s mine. How long have I been here?”
“About a week”
“A WEEK!” Kate jumped up, causing Mary to squeak nervously and slide back, “Sorry. I… May need to leave as soon as my wings stop feeling so stiff … uh.. y-your turn?”
“Oh.. ok. Uh.. w-whats heaven like?”
Kate took a breath, “Ok so this is, an interesting one. Let’s put it this way. I can only remember so far back. Longer in the past my memories get, fuzzier, just like I’m sure yours do to.”
Mary nodded
“Well, I’ve been here. For at least hundreds of years, so … I honestly don’t remember anything else. The creatures I fight, the demons, they definitely have a ‘home’ they come from that could be called ‘hell’ so one would assume I came from a ‘heaven’ but I truly don’t remember it.”
Mary’s face was a combination of shock and concern, “Ohh wow.. oh… so . you are like... stranded?”
“I consider the city my home, so I don’t feel stranded.” Kate said, “but that was two, so my turn to ask a pair of questions: Where are we, relative to the City? And how did I get here?”
“Well, this is … well the town is small enough that it doesn’t really exist on its own so much. People just call it ‘notch’ or ‘the notch’ around here. On account of it being situated near were the river carves through some hills, There used to be large farms on both sides of the hills and the narrow river valley was the connection between them. The freeway moved most traffic though so there’s very little here now. Save the church a few buildings down the road from here. We’re about an hour from Valborg proper”
“As for how you got here…” Mary took a breath and started to explain.
Her story led up to a week ago, in the accursed demon infested apartment. She had decided to get a temporary place in the city to see more of the world than she would have from her tiny notch in the hills. It had all been going so well, she had found a nice church in the area and was meeting new people through there and from just exploring the various stores and other sights of the city. Working as a barista was a LOT more stressful than she had originally expected it to be but it paid her bills.
She had started to get concerned when she met a young man, a fox, who was not a regular at the church but had suddenly started attending. He seemed almost scared of the place, like the holy mother would up and bludgeon him at random. He had arrived only a day or two after she had heard distressing news stories about some sort of terrorist attack at one of the city’s largest companies.
She had struck up a conversation with him in an attempt to calm him down and make him feel more welcome. It had seemed to work at first, until the man started to come across as unhinged. He talked about going to hell for attacking an angel, a literal angel, or how demons were rising from hell.
She had started to become somewhat scared of the man, and was considering cutting off contact when she had learned how right he had been. She wasn’t sure how long she had remained chained in her own place once the real demons had shown up. The demons had laid claim to her place and to her body, they had given her a choice and she had chosen to live, despite what it would mean for her honor. She had hoped the demons would eventually grow bored and let her go, but they didn’t seem to tire, and every day she had wished more and more that she had chosen to die instead. Until the day that an angel arrived.
Back in the present Kate placed a hand on her shoulder, “You didn’t lose any, ‘honor’ there, you know. They did. You survived.”
Mary nodded, trying her best to hold back tears, “I.. I’ve been trying not to think about it, but…”
“It’s only been a week, you will heal.” Kate said again squeezing her shoulder in reassurance.
“So long as you’re here… ok” Mary nodded, “Anyway. I’m not sure why I turned back, but.. you were at the top of the stairs and it looked like you had passed out or something. SO I went back up and got you.”
“You carried me out? That’s actually impressive” Kate said knowing that she weighted a good bit more than a normal person.
“I had to kind of drag you. Collapsed in the alley. Then used a payphone to make a collect call to… well the only person who would believe me.”
“Crazy guy?”
She nodded, “I told him to bring some clothes and a vehicle to move something heavy. I was half worried he’d try something since I wasn’t exactly decent at the time, but he helped me dress, and then load you into the truck. He didn’t seem surprised that you were invisible. At least invisible to him. I could see you fine.”
Kate had a bit of a lightbulb moment, “This guy. Is his name ‘Sam’ by any chance?”
