Yet another young bird, this one another Ruddy Turnstone. It is missing all but one of its toes, and all of its little claws that help it grip stuff. This was not an "oops something almost ate me" accident, this happens because people leave trash on the beach. This bird probably got tangled in fishing line and slowly and excruciatingly had his toes and feet amputated. Now this young bird hobbles around on stumps. He does ok, but he is a much easier target for a predator now. And don't give me that circle of life bullshit here, because guess what? THIS IS NOT NATURAL. Look at him. He is in pain. Pick up your trash! I hate to be so preachy, but this is how it is, and it's not going to change unless YOU change it.

It's sad because people figure it's ok, since the birds missing toes and legs and what not still get around pretty well. They don't think about how much pain the bird was probably in until the injuries heal completely, or how much the bird's quality and probably length of life are reduced.
Yeah, exactly. It might still be able to get around, but that doesn't mean it's going to continue living as normal. Without those talons it can't grip onto branches, thus making it more prone to being preyed upon.
People need to stop thinking that animals are inferior, but given the amount of stupidity among us I doubt that'll ever happen. If it does, it will be a looooong time.

Poor thing. I've never seen this happen before. I love ruddy turnstones, they're so neat and beautiful little birds. This makes me sad looking at it. You can't see expression on his little face, but you can tell the poor little guy isn't exactly living life to his full potential as if he would with two feet.
