This is a foray into the realm of "someone so consumed by thoughts of revenge that he will stop at nothing to achieve his ambition."
Tod Maiham's grandmother was Songween's sister Olnajine. Songween's mother disinherited her and her twin Olgalili by having Songween. The sisters vowed to get their birthright back. They tried to kill their baby sister; their mother sent Songween to America to keep her safe, and exiled the sisters.
The sisters taught their children, and grandchildren, to hate Songween and to do everything they could to get Rackenroon back.
But they were not united--they fought against each other's clans, too.
Since they had only boys, though, the males had to corrupt their wives. What ambitious sheyena would not want to try to gain the rank of Mother of Duchess by marrying a Prince?
Tod is convinced that his daughter(s) are the rightful heirs of Rackenroon, and Songween's bringing Kathy and Sandy into it at this late stage has only whipped up his determination to win out in the end. Making a dirty deal with a lion is perfectly logical to him.

That scene with Kathy and Sandy was cut awfully short. I guess it would've been receptive to have yet another character rightfully telling Kathy how stupid of a decision it was to save Jinjur while she tries to defend making a bad decision under good faith.
Tod does realize that Vyschuss has been cut out of the running, right? She was only there because her mother wanted to prevent Jinjur from touching the throne. But I'm not surprised. These hyenas would sooner stab their own kin even if they were a new born infant just to accede to power.
