The great city of Ker-Ys was the jewel of the North, a powerful city where the Bediz and the Fae lived together, achieving great things. But treachery and hate brought destruction to the Beacon City, and a great storm sank it beneath the waves. Only Ahes Dahut, the Princess of Kernev, remained, trapped by a powerful curse in the form of a mermaid in the silent city beneath the waves. Driven by her loneliness, Ahes sought to recreate the spell that cursed her, transforming other lonely souls into mermaids, rebuilding her city and her family.
A traveling troubadour in search of inspiration, Clemence d'Auvergne traveled all across Kornôgel, before finding a muse and an audience in the lonely queen of Ys-Beneath-the-Waves. Clemence joined Ahes in her underwater home, becoming the court musician of the sunken city, collecting, preserving the songs of those who pass through its gates.
This year, I'm going to try the Mermay challenge once more with more pictures of the Marie-Morgane of Ys-Beneath-the-Waves, from my fantasy series Kroashent, inspired by the folklore and history of Brittany. Clemence is one of the first Marie-Morgane I drew and takes up a special place for me. The prompt siren, is an interesting one. As many know, the Sirens of the Odyssey are half-bird creatures, but the popular interpretation often links them with mermaids. One of the reasons for this is the Marie-Morgane of Brittany, one of, or perhaps the, archetypal folkloric merfolk whose enchanting songs lure sailors to the waters, where they vanish beneath the waves.
