The first rescue (one shot story)
When the young human, Esteban Melinao arrived in Chakona, he met an old skunktaur who turned out to be an understanding and loving friend, despite the boy's prejudice against these creatures. This is part of the plot of Sunset in Amistad, the first book that you can read here.

The afternoon was still young. Esteban walked calmly along the beach, without haste or concern. The sea wind brought the pleasant and refreshing humidity of the sea, as well as the memory of his native Valparaíso City on Earth.
Chakats, Morphs, Skunktaur and other non-human species enjoyed the place. Esteban liked to listen to his favorite music while he walked. He had planned to brush up on some engineering-related subjects in his PADD, but it was all too quaint to concentrate on equations and calculations.
Suddenly, he felt like talking to Vroeg. It was now customary for the old skunktaur to keep him company in the evenings. But it was still too early for hy to show up on the beach. He looked up at the mound and saw that there was no one sitting there. So he calmly walked to that place. He thought it was a shame, and an oddity, too, that Vroeg didn't use any communication devices. As they walked, he began looking at his PADD screen. Not paying attention where he stepped, he accidentally kicked the snout of a little chakat that was half buried playing in the sand. The little puppy gave a shrill cry of pain before beginning to sob. Esteban, frightened, crouched down to check hir condition.
"Oh! I'm so sorry little one. Forgive me. I didn't see you"
Esteban tried to comfort the cub by stroking hir fur, but the frightened chakat bit him and almost ripped off his finger.
"Ouch!" the boy exclaimed. At that moment, two large adult chakats quickly approached as they felt the child's moans of pain. One of them took him in hir arms, while the other directly faced Esteban.
"Hey! What did you do to my son!" exclaimed the dazed chakat.
"I'm sorry. I got distracted while walking and accidentally kicked it. Please accept my apologies."
"Shi has a split lip and is bleeding a little" said the other chakat after examining the little boy.
"Grrr... How about I do the same to you!" exclaimed the furious chakat.
"Eh?.. But I already told you it was an accident. Believe me, I'm sorry" Esteban said again nervously. At that moment, the chakat pounced on the boy, putting hir two front legs on his chest, pinning him to the ground. Esteban, frightened, tried to move the chakat's heavy legs, but it was impossible to move three hundred kilos of meat and muscles.
"Please don't do this" The boy begged. But the chakat responded with contempt.
"Stupid human! You hurt my puppy!", while showing his teeth. At that moment, a shiver ran through the chakat's body. Forced by an invisible force, shi released Esteban, withdrawing hir legs and taking a few steps back. The human, still face up on the ground, he observed how gray legs with long claws were located on each side of his head.
"The boy said it was an accident and he was sorry. Isn't that enough for you?" Suddenly a familiar voice was heard. The chakat, surprised, watched as an old skunktaur forced hym back.
"Who are you?" Shi asked in disbelief.
"I'm someone who tries to keep you out of trouble. Go in peace please" insisted the skunktaur. The chakat still with anger in hir heart, tried to face the newcomer. But this one, with a penetrating look, made him desist from any hostile attitude. In this way, both adult chakats left the place with the little cub, who surprisingly, was no longer bleeding or crying.
Esteban was relieved to see that his rescuer was that old skunk he had met days ago.
"Vroeg! It's you!" he exclaimed as he stand up helped by the skunktaur.
"What were you doing on the floor, Esteban?"
"That chakat got mad because I accidentally hit hir pup. I apologized, but shi didn't accept it"
"You were lucky that I came early today"
"I guess so. I'm sorry, I didn't mean..."
"Nah... Nah... Don't apologize to me. Are you okay?"
"Yes Vroeg. Thank you."
"Perfect. Do you want to walk?"
"Huh? Walk?"
"Heh heh. Yes. Weren't you walking when I arrived?"
"No... Well... I was going to the mound. And the truth is, I really wanted to see you today"
"Really?"
"Yes... I guess I still feel alone on this huge planet. I don't know anyone but you and that renzar couple. But they, they still scare me. I don't know"
"Well, son. That's why I came earlier today. I could feel your anxiety. And honestly, I missed you too. I was already bored listening to those old skunks in the shelter where I live. You are to me, like the air fresh in the morning, which renews my energies"
"Oh wow, Vroeg. I'm glad about that." Esteban answered with a smile.
"Then let's walk. It's still too early for Chakastra sunset, don't you think?" Vroeg said, as the two headed down the beach through the crowd. The boy no longer felt so alone. Little by little, Vroeg filled the anxiety of being away from home.
"Thank you for coming" The young human said.
"Thank you for having me" replied the old skunk with a smile in his heart.
They walked leisurely along the seashore. Sometimes the waves wet their feet and the breeze gently caressed their faces.
"How stupid have I been. How did I not see the puppy in front of me?"
"Oh boy. Do you still suffer and beat yourself up over it? It's over! It's over! Learn your lesson and look forward."
"But Vroeg..."
"Son, in the world, many people live prisoner of their past. They allow their past to define them, and they are blind to the possibilities of change that life offers them. Because I tell you, life is not static. Life is change and movement. Life is an opportunity. If only they could see it clearly"
"Vroeg, it's not nice to feel like you've inadvertently hurt someone."
"But that doesn't take away from the fact that it's past. If it makes you feel better, then it compensates for the damage caused. But the important thing, son, don't get stuck in the pain and guilt. Compensate and grow. Take the necessary pause. But then move on"
Both continued walking together on the beach. Esteban felt very calm. Spontaneously, the boy took the skunk by the arm, who wagged hir tail happily.
"Come on little one. Don't be sad. Life always gives us the opportunity to pay for our mistakes. But it also compensates us greatly"
"Vroeg. When it gets dark, for some reason, I also get sad. Would you stay one night with me in the hotel room?" Esteban asked anxiously.
"And why don't we stay here, on the beach. I like to have the universe above my head when I sleep" Vroeg replied with a smile.
"Really? And is it allowed to spend the night on the beach?" the boy asked.
"And why is it going to be banned? This is Chakona Hee hee"
"Okay. I like the idea" Esteban added.
Little by little the sun of Chakona, reached the end of its path, to the distant horizon. Once again, its rays created luminous spots in the sea. Vroeg and Esteban watched the beautiful spectacle together. Vroeg's mental harmony helped Esteban to find his own tranquility.
After the laying of Chakastra, both of them looked for a better place than the mound of sand to spend the night. Vroeg pointed to a rock surrounded by sand to keep out the wind. After sharing a snack that the boy went up to buy, skunk and human settled down next to each other. As the hours and the conversation passed, the boy fell asleep.
"Vroeg. Do you mind if I use you for a pillow?"
"You always do, Esteban. Of course you can!"
"Thank you. You are so soft and you smell so
good"
"And so you don't get cold, I'll cover you with my tail if you want. It's quite thick and furry"
"But you Vroeg, what will you cover yourself with? Maybe I should bring some blankets from the hotel"
"Don't worry, son. My fur protects me very well, unlike you, who don't have hair ha ha ha"
"Okay" The human said, before settling his head on Vroeg's body and covering himself with his tail. The skunktaur hugged him with hir front paws and they both stood still, silent, looking at the bright stars in the sky. Esteban, remembering the blows that his father gave him, and the abandonment of which he was a victim when he was on Earth, suddenly asked, with tears in his eyes.
"Vroeg, why is there pain?"
The skunktaur, stroking his hair, answered in a calm voice.
"Because, if pain did not exist, how could you evolve? For the vast majority of living beings, growth and evolution are only possible through pain. But on this path, you are not alone. The universe always gives you its help when you are attentive to receive it. A phrase that you read by chance, the advice of a friend, the example of another person, the kind gesture of a stranger... even the nonsense that I say, could serve your purpose of growing heh heh heh "
"Vroeg, thanks for being with me" The boy said before falling asleep. The skunktaur thought for a moment as he continued to caress Esteban.
"Poor boy. How much damage is in your soul. And how much more will you have to suffer. My only regret is that I won't be with you long to accompany you. But I see clearly how strong you are. I'm sure you will grow, little one" Hy declared, as the warmth of a tear rolled down hir cheek.
