Chapter 47: Acolytes and Pancakes
“I fail to see how pancakes will help me get back to the city” Kate said a bit irritably, as she stuffed herself in the passenger seat of Sam’s truck, getting her wings in awkward, but she got comfy. Her pair of saviors turned rural tour guides were insisting on taking her to ‘town’, or at least as much as one building ever several turns of this wingy valley road could be called a town. Kate could not remember seeing a more sparsely populated area.
“They may not, but they will help you heal and get your energy back, holy mistress. We’ll think about transportation while we eat.” Mary said, poking her head in through the back window. The truck only had two seats, so the otter was crouched in the bed while Sam started it up and started driving. “And I swear by the holy mother that I will serve you till your mission on this world is done.”
Kate sighed, this worship stuff was starting to grate on her, but she probably did need these two at least for now so there was little point addressing it with her pair of newly acquired impromptu acolytes. What she actually said was “Are you sure you’re ok back there, Mary?” Kate asked.
Mary nodded, “Thank you for your concern mistress, but I rode with you in the back on the way out here, so I can handle it.”
“Still though seems a bit dangerous.”
“I’d ride in the back” Sam said, “but she doesn’t have a license.”
“OK well if that’s... ok never mind about that then” Kate said, “Does this pancake girl ‘Shannon’ know about me?”
“No but we might be able to pass the wings off as a costume” Mary said, “The nightgown isn’t the best ‘going into town’ wear, but at least you are descent.”
Kate looked over at Sam and tried to project, ‘she hasn’t thought this through, has she?’ to him.
He seemed to get it and chimed in, “Mary I think you might be forgetting something.”
“Oh?”
“You’re the only one that can SEE her”
Mary blushed at her mistake, “oh right, sorry, I.. uh I suppose we can just order larger plates and you can sneak some food off of them. Uh. If that’s ok mistress…?”
“Not the only thing you forgot” Sam said, turning a corner and passing the 4rth building they had seen on this short little trip. Settlements here were sparse enough that you didn’t see two at once it seemed, the next was always at least around the next bend. “Also we’re about there so we will have to figure it out one way or another.”
To compliment the sparseness of the houses they had passed, town was only about a dozen buildings in total. A gas station a general store, a restaurant. This ‘Notch’ was the sort of town that had ‘THE’ <insert business here> rather than ‘A’ <insert business here>. Sam pulled them into a parking lot by THE diner, helpfully labeled simply as ‘diner’. The front looked like a repurposed side off a school bus had been painted and used as a wall / windows for a fairly makeshift front. At least the rest of the building looked like a real establishment.
Thankfully Sam parked around the back so they had a bit of concealment for the ghost nightgown to get out of the driver’s seat.
“OK” Sam said, “What should we do? Cover you in dust? Uh.. I mean… that’s about the only thing I can think of that would make you visible… holy mistress.”
“What was wrong with the plan to just sneak food to her while she’s invisible?” Mary asked, “If she’s really invisible to everyone except me.”
“The down you gave her ISN’T, Mary” Sam said, “We can’t walk in there with a ghost dress following us around”
“Oh right. Well, I suppose the dust idea might work…huh”
A soft thump of the gown hitting the truck bead attracted both their attention, quickly followed by a rapidly reddening Mary almost giving herself whiplash as she tried to look anywhere else.
“The dust wont work, I’d look like dirt and I’d still have no eyes, and what if it got brushed off” Kate asserted, “I’ll just go like this, I’m used to it. Mary, I get the feeling you two are going to be following me around for awhile, so… try to control the uh… circulation… in your face. “
“This works” Sam said.
Mary squeaked.
“We’ll get a booth, I’ll take the wall side, so people won’t see the indent where I’m sitting and won’t accidentally touch me. Sam, you’re next to me. I’m not sure Mary is… up for it.”
“Yes mistress” Sam actually saluted, and the trio made their way inside. The ‘front’ of the building where seating was, had clearly been added later, the floor appeared to be a deck from a porch and more and more it seemed like it was LITERALLY a side of a school bus making up the front wall. Kate slide into one of the booths and Sam set himself down next to her while Mary took the opposite side. Mary was slightly more in control of her blush, but was intensely staring at Sam’s nose, likely to avoid looking anywhere else.
“Interesting architecture” Kate whispered, “City has a variety, but nothing so… DIY.”
“Saved on money, Holy Mistress.” Mary said to Sam’s nose, “After the traffic dried up business became mostly locals only”
“Speaking of” Sam nodded at a rapidly approaching waitress.
At first Kate was concerned at the speed the woman was moving, but soon realized why. The woman was an otter like Mary and looked no small part similar as well. She was perhaps a bit older, but probably not by much. The biggest difference was her waistline; if the food here was indeed as good as the other two implied, then the waitress must have been sampling her own supply.
“MARY” she blurted, arms already out.
“Hi Shanahhhhmffff” Was all Mary got out before being pulled up in to a bear hug, and pressed tight against the larger woman’s body. Mary seemed resigned to it as she was shook back and forth by the bearhug before being plopped back down.
“Hey cuz. I heard you came back from the city. What happened? Not to your liking? Or did you just go in the first place to fish yourself a boy?”
“Wait whAaah” Sam likewise found himself interrupted, though in his case by the portly Shannon giving his cheek a pinch.
“When you stopped in yesterday, I thought you was just a passerby little foxy. You didn’t say you were my little cousin’s man.”
“w-well I ... I don’t know... I... well”
“Oh Don’t be shy, cutie, I say how she was blushing while staring at you just now. You musta done something to get that reaction. I’ll just make the new couple my super special breakfast for two. Be back soon, you two.”
Shannon, diner owner, cousin haver, and situation mis-interpreter, vanished almost as fast as she arrived as she darted back to the kitchen leaving a stunned silence at the table. Kate had plastered herself against the wall to avoid any accidental Shannon grabbing, Mary was still blushing, though for slightly different reasons now, and Sam just looked perplexed.
“So…” Kate managed to say after a solid five seconds had passed, “She seems to have decided that you two are dating.”
“B-bu-but we.. aren’t…” Mary stammered, while Sam reddened.
“Not sure that woman is going to take ‘He’s not my boyfriend’ sitting down.” Kate said, “Would be a decent cover to explain you hanging out too, and who knows, maybe you will actually find you like each other.”
“Mistress please” Mary said, glancing back and fourth between Kate and Sam, turning redder which each one she looked at, “Is .t-this really t-the time.”
“We both need our minds taken off things that we don’t have the power to fix just yet…” Kate said solemnly, then smiled, “Plus it was kind of funny.”
