Exactly what the title says. I've been having engineering issues ever since I started putting music up on FA. The main reason: I'm using 3.5" floppy disks recorded on and played by an old MIDI synth along with Apple's GarageBand to get the music up here, and the values for various effects on the synth (in this case, velocity) sound one way, while they sound differently through GarageBand. The most problematic sounds are the percussive ones, so I've focused on those by picking six different, evenly placed velocities and applying them to components of a drum kit, one at a time: bass drum, hi-hat closed, hi-hat open, snare drum, high tom, middle tom, low tom, cymbal, and a second cymbal.
With any luck, by isolating each sound this way and figuring out which velocity values seem the any given sound, I'll be able to blend them together better in the future. I know I'm getting older, but I happen to know that my hearing remains excellent -- I passed my last hearing test with flying colors, and I haven't noticed any substantial changes in my hearing since. It's gotta be my poor engineering skills...
