I saw that movie when it 1st came out. An all star cast of minor stars... George Peppard (A-Team and more), Richard Thomas (The Waltons), Robert Vaughn (Man from U.N.C.L.E. and A-Team and more), John Saxon (Enter The Dragon with Bruce Lee and Joe Kidd with Clint Eastwood), and Sybil Danning (known B-movie actor). It was a pretty good movie but it came on the heels of Star Wars and Battlestar Galactica so it didn't do well and the box office.

So... shields up would be... condoms? And you need that to protect your J-UNK. :-P

How did they get away with that ship design?!? Very good V, reminds me of an exchange in one of Iain M. Banks Culture novels. Paraphrased, two characters are looking at a Rapid Offensive Unit spaceship in a docking bay:

"It look's like a dildo!", she exclaimed

"That's appropriate", he replied, "Armed it can fuck systems".

I swear search-engines are getting less accurate and more obtuse, I couldn't find the correct quote and it kept returning completely unrelated results, mostly slanted politics.

I have no idea, but I thought it was just too cool... especially when the ship was a female AI.

To me it’s very reminiscent of a number of Red Dwarf episodes. Fortunately none of these charafers end up as a brain in a jar, but one just might, possibly, perhaps end up…a little pagers.

Oh well, anyway its a reference to an old 90's british comedy series that was essentially a cross between Lost In Space and Gilligan's Island. This reminded me of elements of a couple episodes.
