"Are you sure she's mine?" Cordenth asked, his nostrils twitching as he beheld the tiny ball of flesh held betwix his beloved's arms.
"For the last time, of course I'm sure." Lyndis cooed, swaddling the babe. "Who else, could it have been?"
"Well..She's lacking many..." He stuttered, holding his paws ever close. "Scales."
"You expected otherwise? Shapechanging is a strange thing."
His heart fluttered as his daughter sneezed, certainly strange it was. How were they supposed to know? "Is it safe to nuzzle her?" Humans, and thus half-elves were ever so fragile. Children double as so.
"Of course it is, just be gentle." Lyndis leaned back, applying a kiss upon her love's cheek. "Now what do you think we should name her? After one of our parents?"
"But Ossai is a terrible name." He replied with a wrinkled muzzle, "And Elizabeth is no better."
"Whats wrong with Elizabeth?" She laughed, "Have you a thing against human names?"
"No, but should it not be grander?" His tail wiggled, his snout drawing ever closer. His heart swooned as the baby opened her eyes, bright yellow, just like his. Inside his blood began to warm, instinct taking over. He'd die for her, fight her, nothing would be denied. "I just want it to be special. To let her know how much she means to me." His cheek gently rested upon the soft skin.
The baby was not frightened, she did not cry. She squealed and grabbed at viridian scales, she was going to be courageous as Arcturus that much was certain.
"How about Kalith?" He asked, tentatively turning to Lyndis. When she nodded he rumbled, applying a single smooch upon Kalith's cheek. As she gigged he wouldn't help but warble, bringing another round of giggling from the baby's lips.

If this sort of thing is interesting to you, I write a fantasy series where dragons actively drive the plot! It's called Scales and Honor, and it can be found here: https://unscforces.sofurry.com/
