A recent commission! This one was fun to work on. Enjoy!
A man sits at a cubicle, years of bland office work plainly visible in every crease and line on his face.
“Bored with your day-to-day?”
The same man, riding the bus with equally-depressed-looking fellow passengers.
“Trapped in a never-ending cycle of drudgery and sameness?”
The same man, sitting alone at home in front of a TV with no companion aside from the remote and a microwave dinner of mac and cheese.
“Need excitement in your life? Well, do we have the product for you!”
The man whips his face around to look at the camera as an exciting musical theme kicks in, along with a bright flashing logo and a bottle of strange-looking pills. “INTRODUCING MORPHONEX! The world's very first transforming pills!” The commercial continues with shots of laboratories, cheaply-rendered computer animation of DNA strands, and plenty of smiling faces as the announcer continues their spiel. “Morphonex is not a joke! It's the result of decades of scientific research, and its effects have been proven in World Health Organization-supervised testing and examination! It works by chemically rearranging your DNA—the very building blocks of life!—on a molecular level to change your form inside and out. Worried about getting stuck in a new body? Don't worry! One pill of Morphonex will wear off over the course of a week. Want something a little more permanent? Morphonex can be ingested on a regular basis to genetically train the body to accept its new form permanently! Afraid of pain? Noooo problemo! The transformation process is guaranteed to be one hundred percent pain-free, or your money back! That's right, OR YOUR MONEY BACK!”
The man from the beginning of the commercial is back, his phone in hand as he looks at the camera in desperation; the announcer continues as a URL appears on the bottom of the screen. “Oh, so you wanna know how to get these incredible pills? It's simple! Just go to this web address, fill out the easy-to-follow form to tell us exactly how you want us to change your life, send it to us with ONE easy payment of $55.99, and then just wait for this miracle of scientific progress to arrive on your doorstep via our free shipping service!”
Morphonex may not be for everyone. Side effects may include, but are not limited to: coughing, sneezing, new allergies, changes in taste sight and smell, drowsiness, dizziness, loss of coordination, nausea, and mild headaches. Do not take Morphonex if you are pregnant or are looking to become pregnant. Ask your doctor and/or veterinarian if Morphonex is right for you.
“Don't waste a minute longer of your life in blandness and boredom. Take control with Morphonex! Morphonex—bringing change to your life!”
Nora turned off the TV and paced back and forth, nervousness and excitement swelling in equal measure. The bizarre commercial had started showing up everywhere a little under a year ago, and was quickly dismissed as a silly prank of some kind... until proof of its reality became commonplace. The pills were real! Their effects were real! In fact, over the past month or so alone, Nora herself had seen people she personally knew sporting new appendages—like the tail, cat ears, and antelope horns of her cousin—or even new bodies, like the bizarre centaur-like creature one of her co-workers had become. At first, Nora had no intention of trying out the new miracle pill, even after learning of its authenticity. First off, whenever someone asked her what she would choose to become if given the chance, she felt somewhat nervous as her thoughts immediately turned to “German Shepherd”—boring and unimaginative compared to the wild and vivid displays of fantastic biology she'd seen most other people go for. More importantly, her life seemed perfectly fine as it was; she had a steady job at an internet startup with plenty of room for growth, had no health problems, and confidence to spare. Unfortunately, that all changed when the startup was subject to a massive buy-out that ended up with her getting fired along with the majority of her co-workers; somehow, she had been the last to know of this, which meant that she was the only one who didn't have a new job lined up ahead of time. This on its own was bad enough, but then the struggle of job hunting made things worse; for some reason, she was either overqualified or underqualified for everything. The resulting stress ended up taking a toll on her confidence and her health in equal measure, to the point where one potential employer cut her interview short and practically begged her to go home and get some sleep. In short, Nora's life had been completely upended, and she desperately needed an escape. With a few clicks, she ordered a bottle of Morphonex—just enough to spend a couple of weeks as a dog—and then called in a favor from a friend.
“Well, we're all set!”
Nora turned to see the friend in question enter with a large bag of dog food. Katherine was one of her oldest friends and had a steady job running a local pastry shop; the plan, as they'd hashed it out, was for Nora to spend her “dog days” with Katherine, after which Nora would join the latter in co-running the shop. Kat took the food bag and placed it next to a small pile of related supplies: A second large bag of food, a collar, a leash, a dog bed, and a couple of bowls.
“So,” Katherine said with a smile. “You ready? I won't be upset if you back out, Nor.”
Nora gave a resolute nod as she picked up the recently-delivered bottle from a nearby table. “You already bought the stuff, Kat; it wouldn't be fair if I bailed out now that you have it all ready for me. Besides, I need this. The escape of it, I mean...”
A brief pause came as both stared at the bottle of pills for a moment or two, the weight of the moment dawning on them. The change would only be temporary, but that didn't make it any less serious a decision. Finally, Katherine broke the silence. “Do you want me to leave the room, or—”
“I... no, please stay,” Nora responded. “I think it'll be easier if I had some moral support while I deal with... whatever happens during the change.” Opening the bottle and taking out a single pill—shaped like a dog bone, fittingly enough—she put it in her mouth and exchanged the bottle for a small glass of water that Katherine handed her, and swallowed.
A minute or so passed, with nothing to show for it. Nora was about to wonder what went wrong when a strange tingling sensation washed over her entire body, starting from her stomach and radiating outward like ripples in a pond. The experience made her reel slightly, but she quickly regained her balance.
“Nor, look! Your hands!”
At Katherine's astonished exclamation, Nora held her hands in front of her face and saw something that nearly took her breath away: tiny brown hairs were slowly sprouting from the backs of her hands and fingers as her nails slowly lengthened and thickened. She could feel another ripple of tingles radiate outward from her core, and with that ripple the hairs—no, her fur—grew that much thicker and longer, and covered that much more skin. “Whoa... this is wild...”
Katherine moved closer to get a better look for herself. “What does it feel like?”
“It's hard to describe,” replied Nora as she felt the fur start to spread more and saw her fingernails further change into future claws. “If I had to give words to it, I'd say something along the lines of ripples and waves of weird energy going back and forth all over me.”
“Does it hurt at all?”
Nora shook her head, a bit of pleasant surprise in her voice. “No... not a bit. Actually I kind of like the tingly feeling—whoa!” A sudden stronger ripple shot through her, causing her to flinch as a bizarre new sensation was felt at the base of her spine. “Uh, I think that was the tail starting... can you see anything back there, Kat?”
Her friend looked her over a couple of times and shook her head. “Not yet, but your fur is definitely spreading. And I think you just lost like half an inch in height.”
This is insane, Nora thought, I can hardly believe this is happening to me at all. Looking around, she definitely felt smaller, at least a little bit. Her attention was once again caught by a fresh wave of tingles, this one the strongest yet. Nora felt an invisible tug on her face, her butt, her thumbs, her ears, and her feet as the room suddenly grew larger.
“Okay, you just lost like a foot and a half of height all at once. Freaky,” Katherine said.
Nora gave her friend an exasperated yet playful eye roll. “You know dogs chase cats, right?” The tugging sensations began to grow stronger with every new ripple and wave. “But you're right, I'm definitely getting smaller. And what's more, I—huh?” Nora's words caught in her throat as she heard a sudden change in her own voice; in an instant, it had dropped almost an octave in pitch and taken on a slightly gravelly timbre.
Katherine couldn't help but laugh. “Hahaha! Well, if being a dog doesn't work out, you can still try out for a position as vocalist for a death metal band with that voice!”
“I swear I'll bite you,” Nora retorted, though some shock found its way through her sarcastic tone as she again lost quite a bit of height and fur now began to cover her face. Speaking of which, her nose, mouth, teeth and tongue all felt very strange indeed, and her ears felt... higher than before. “Ohkkkay, thaass oddh.”
“You're telling me,” Katherine nodded. “I didn't expect a snout to suddenly make you sound so drunk. Well, barely a snout so far, but you're definitely getting there. And I can kind of see something moving around your lower back.”
Nora was about to respond to the further snark from her friend when she felt the tugging at her backside get even stronger, with an even more bizarre feeling following as she suddenly detected the presence of a new limb where there previously was none. “A Taillh, I haff a tailh!” So distracted was she by the beginnings of the new appendage that she forgot her loosening clothes altogether... at least, up until the moment where her skirt and panties slipped, causing her to yelp in surprise.
This elicited another chuckle from Katherine. “Regretting not sending me out of the room now, are you?”
“Shhuuht uuuuhprrrf!” The combination of the teasing plus the surprise at how difficult talking had suddenly become only added to her embarrassment further. As it was, any blushing was now hidden by the fur coat that now covered her entire body, though it wasn't quite at full length yet. As the tail continued to grow and she continued to shrink, another massive ripple of tingles—the largest yet—announced the further shifting of bones and joints, forcing Nora to begin gradually leaning forward as she slowly lost the ability to stand upright. “Hrrrr...”
“Nor? Are you okay? Does it hurt?”
Nora attempted to respond, but at last her snout and tongue had become too unwieldy for English. “Nrrnff.” Realizing the futility of continuing to converse out loud, she simply shook her head in the negative. It didn't hurt—in fact, the tingling continued to be pleasant—but it definitely felt strange. She could feel muscles and bones and cartilage alike sliding and shifting and twisting around to fit her new form, and while there was some occasional discomfort here and there it didn't graduate to full-on pain. As she finally fell onto all fours, her feet and hands began their final transformations; her thumbs and big toes slowly shifted back to become dewclaws; her palms and soles lengthened and narrowed; her fingers and toes shrunk even as the narrowing of her palms and soles caused them to push together. With the formation of thickened pads and the final development of claws, Nora now found herself with four fully-formed canine legs and paws. All that was left was the tail, her ears, and just the slightest bit of fur left to grow. One last wave of sensations washed over her, and within moments she felt the changes finally cease. She attempted to step out of her human clothes, but had a bit of difficulty doing so, forcing Katherine to come to her aid. With the last few remnants of humanity gone, Nora instinctively shook herself.
“Wow,” Katherine said in an awed whisper, “you really did just turn into a German Shepherd...”
The mirror, Nora thought, I have to see what I look like! She attempted to start walking towards the bedroom where a dressing mirror hung, but found her new legs difficult to adjust to and face-planted immediately, eliciting a snort of laughter from Katherine. It took a few minutes, but slowly and gradually Nora managed to figure out how to walk on four legs well enough to reach the mirror in question. Upon looking in it, she felt her fur bristle and her ears raise in shock. There, staring back at her, was a full-blown German Shepherd. As she further examined her new reflection, she noticed slight changes in her vision; it was definitely clearer than before, but at the same time the colors seemed muted. She wasn't colorblind, but certain things were very different to her new canine eyes than they were to her former human ones. A bright red comforter now looked almost blue-green, while orange shades were now a sickly greenish-yellow. Pink was white, and violet was just another shade of blue.
“I wish you could still talk,” Katherine said as she walked in. “I'd love to know what it looks and feels like from your perspective.”
Nora looked up to see a collar and leash in Katherine's hands. Already? Seriously?
Katherine giggled. “Heheh, it's weird, I could practically FEEL the sarcasm coming off of you there just now. Anyway, I just figured you might want to see what the outside is like as a dog. It's okay if you're not ready for that.”
“Hrrf,” Nora responded with a soft bark, walking over and gently touching the leash with her nose. It's fine. May as well get it over with.
Sensing her friend's intentions, Katherine smiled and carefully put the collar and leash on Nora and guided her to the door. “There's a park not far from here. Why don't we walk there so you have room to really run around and test out your new body?”
Nora nodded and followed Kat out the door, slowly becoming more confident and able in her gait as they proceeded out of the building and onto the streets. The instant the sliding glass doors of the apartment complex opened, a slight gust of wind greeted the pair, carrying a veritable flood of smells and scents with it. It was almost enough to make Nora stumble, but somehow she managed to adjust quickly to the new sensory input, and to her utter astonishment she was able to “read” each scent like a book. Grass... trees... water... dirt... EUGH! Someone is using too much cologne... As they exited onto the sidewalk and began their journey, the smells increased in number and variety, and yet none of it became overwhelming. In fact, Nora found herself quite enjoying the extra stimulus. Who knew concrete had a smell? Or the road? Various people passed by, not giving Nora a second glance. This is crazy. I could instantly tell each and every one of them apart like I'd memorized them... they all smell different.
Sound was becoming novel as well, albeit more annoying. I can definitely understand why real dogs bark at traffic, she mused. Car horns are louder than I thought they'd be! And what the hell is that annoying buzz? Is that the crosswalk sign? The noises and smells and sights continued to draw Nora's attention every which way at once, to the point where Katherine had to stop more than once to give her time to adjust further. At last, they reached the park, and as they walked along the paths the annoying sounds of the city became slightly more muted, to Nora's extreme relief, though they never quite vanished. The smells were definitely more pleasant—grass and greenery was prevalent here, and asphalt and car oil were forgotten almost entirely as the scent of the natural world washed the cold and unfeeling city smells away. The grass smells... kind of lemony. The trees, too. Oh, those flowers over there smell pretty sweet... and there's something else... Sniffing further, she found a smell that moved strangely, and curiosity forced her to move in search of it, tugging Katherine with her for a few feet before stopping at the base of a tree and looking up. The smell was coming from one of the branches...
A squirrel! Wow, that's a really fascinating smell! No wonder dogs go crazy when they see one!
“You're not gonna go chasing that thing, are you Nor?” Katherine asked, her tone only half in jest. “Come on, we still have a little ways before we get to the more dog-friendly section of the park.”
With a brief pause to take in the strangely enticing scent one last time, Nora huffed and followed Katherine back to the path and continued their journey. Every second a new smell or sound would catch Nora's attention, even more so than before they reached the park; she quickly found that animals—birds, squirrels, people, and the like—had the most enticing smells, while plantlife such as grass, trees, and flowers were less appealing but still pleasant in their own right. Artificial materials such as cement, concrete, metal, and plastic were her least favorites. Something about them smelled “off” to her, though she didn't quite understand why. Every smell is like a story, though. Even the bad smells make me curious as to what makes them that way. It's like a whole library based entirely on scent, but I'm only now able to even notice its existence. Amazing...
The sounds of the park were just as fascinating and varied as the smells; she could easily hear the chirping of birds, clearer than ever before—and with that clarity came a new appreciation for the musicality of their chirping, as she realized that she could hear elements of the sounds that humans could not. Running water in a small creek resulted in a quiet burbling noise that to a human's ears would have been a barely audible trickle at best. The wind hissed and howled softly, the rustling of leaves and grass adding their own strangely ethereal quality to the complex symphony of nature that Nora could now hear. It's beautiful, she thought. It's so beautiful. Breathtaking, even. It's been beautiful and breathtaking all of my life, but I've never been able to hear it until now—not really. Not like this. This is how it was meant to be heard. The wonder and amazement of it all carried away what few bits of nervousness she had left in her mind. There was so much to explore, so much to learn, so much to see, that she could never have done as a human. It almost made the moment bittersweet; as many advantages human life had—as much as she would rather live life as a human than a dog, at least in the long term—there was a vast ocean, no, a full-on galaxy's worth of stimuli that was invisible to humans. It was as if she'd been deaf and incapable of smell her whole life, and only now had those two senses truly been opened up to her. Maybe after I get back to being human, I'll order a new set that will give me a dog nose and ears permanently, Nora thought. I can't imagine living without these smells and sounds anymore.
Suddenly, a new set of sounds and smells caught Nora's attention. Something seemed strikingly familiar to her about them, and yet at the same time, she knew instinctively that she had never met these sources in her life. As she and Katherine rounded the bend, she saw the origin of the new smells and sounds: dogs of all breeds, leaping and running and yipping and playing. They look so carefree, she thought. And why wouldn't they be? They can see and smell and hear the world in such a wonderful way... For a moment, she thought about joining in... but then a pang of worry hit her. Would they sense that she wasn't born into this new body? Would they reject her, or snap at her? She had no idea how to act like a dog aside from just miming what she'd seen them do from a human perspective, and she now knew that such was not an accurate depiction.
“Go on,” Katherine said, removing the leash. “What are you waiting for? This is your time. Enjoy yourself.”
Her friend's encouragement was all she needed to break through that last bit of hesitation. With no further fear or regret, Nora leapt and bounded towards the dogs, ready to embrace this incredible gift she'd been given by a simple bottle of pills.
