A drawing, depicting my impressions of the reboot.
Siiigh. Where should I even start?
Guess I'll describe the elements of the picture first.
One of the main things I personally don't like is the changed opening theme. When I hear that Pinky & the Brain part, but don't hear the well-known continuation about the rest of the crew – it feels somehow lonely... I know they should have changed that for obvious reasons, but still..
However, there is one more thing that didn't have to be changed at all, but they did it anyway for no real reason. That «Dot has wit, and Yakko yaks» instead of «Dot is cute» part. I don’t mind at all that Dot got clever lines more often in these series – I love her, I love them all, buuut.. In that opening, it just makes it sound like Dot’s the only one capable of joking witty, while Yakko is not equally good at that, which is just... so unfair and not true :о
The second thing is cutting out not just other characters like Rita & Runt, Slappy Squirrel ect. (I'm sad about them, yet can understand why they're not there at the moment), but those super-easy to write segments beloved by us all. Even those the main Warner trio used to work with. I depicted this with the Wheel of Morality, but you can also put anything in there, like «Good idea, Bad idea», «Useless Fact» and so on. Those are so extremely simple, however they made every series of the original show much more intense.
The other reason why I have depicted exactly the Wheel of Morality in the trash is bit deeper tho. I guess I'm not the only one who noticed this, the plots of some newest episodes try to impose on us... some morals :о Which makes the endings of those episodes simply not funny and does not fit the style of the whole show at all. Really, when the writers try to throw some morals right in our faces like this, it's just feels trashy xd
Buuut despite all this, I cannot say that the 2020 show is bad! I expected much worse, I'll be honest. So much, that I was kinda scared to check it for three days after the release. Because the original Animaniacs mean to me so much. Those moments above upset me for sure, yet not enough to be disappointed in the new series at all, thankfully. Pretty much every episode of Pinky and the Brain is written super well, while with the Warners everything is... not so simple. On one hand we got some really good/nostalgic episodes, on the other hand there are some.. eeehhhhh... would describe it as «what was that?; I don't know how to react» odd ones, and a few with those pesky morals. I think «Good Warner Hunting» and «Fear and Laughter in Burbank» are my personal favorites from there so far. So overall, would say it's still worth checking for at least some of the good stuff and I sincerely hope next season will be better!
