Yeah, that definitely sounds like a good idea. I haven't had much problems with my coats since I often paint small areas at a time...But it takes a lot of practice to get brush strokes to show up as nicely as a bit of spray paint would. Ironically I'm actually a lot better with modeling paints, since it gives me a bit more control and allows me to fix errors if needed.
It's a learning experience for me too. I'm going to use spraypaints on the next one. I'm going to coat the whole thing in black so the original plastic doesn't show through anywhere, then tape and paint the final colors. Stay tuned, and you'll be able to see how it turns out.
