I was thinking something like... he was a good ancient hero, but his heart was corrupted by power and pain...

A lone hero, no one to comfort him as he shouldered the burdens and expectations of a whole world. Then finally, after dealing with it for so long he couldn't handle the pain and loneliness any longer and fell.
Cliche, but still works yep. :)
