Frostbite Chapter 4: The Good Doctor
I made it to Artica, the neighborhood where the town's arctic foxes lived. Not out of segregation, but because they prefer to live someplace cold. I arrived at the lab and hit the doorbell. A female voice on an intercom came up and a camera pointed at me, "If you've come to make fun of my work, you're wasting your time! Wait, a rabbit? In Fox burrow? Either you're a tourist or... would you happen to be the ward of General Barnes?" "Uh... yeah?" In a minute the door opened. Standing there was a female arctic fox dressed in scrubs with goggles on her forehead and blade-based prosthetic feet. "If there's one person who believes in my work it's her. Any friend or family member of hers is a friend of mine. Peter, right? Or do you prefer Junior?" "Either is fine." "How' bout... PJ?" "Uh... I guess that makes sense. Peter and Junior spliced together. I guess you can call me that." "Alrighty, PJ it is! What can I help you with, PJ?" "I was told you were an expert on the supernatural, and I was hoping you could see if this was a supernatural object." I showed her the book. "'The Man From The Window'? Boy, that's a freaky-deeky face on there. Bring it inside so I can scan it."
Once we got inside, I could tell her lab was impressive. The technology in here seemed ay beyond its time. "Alright, hand me the book." I did as she asked. After scanning the book with some strange device, she came up with results. After careful scans, I can confirm that this book indeed possesses supernatural characteristics. For example, while they're old, there are trace readings of supernatural teleportation." "So that's how it got in 9 years ago," "Melissa told me what happened at some point, but I'd like to hear it from your perspective. I told her my backstory.
"That's... quite the loss, kid. I'm sorry. I hope she's ok, wherever she is." "There's also something I discovered today." "Which is?" "I found that I have ice-related superpowers. I think they might be supernatural, too." "Show me." I created a shard of ice. She was immediately surprised by this. "Holy... uh, place it under the scanner." She scanned it. "I can confirm that this ice does indeed have a supernatural signature. Not only that, its composition is sturdier than even diamonds! Plus, I can confirm that it would withstand even the hottest of temperatures! Wait, you like the cold, right? When did you first start liking it?" "When I hid inside the refrigerator." "What if by doing that you... no, that just sounds stupid. Unless..." "What?" "I can't confirm, but for some reason, I feel like that refrigerator is connected. It's hard to say. The supernatural works in chaotic ways usually." "Are there any bad supernatural happenings?" "Well, most of them have been well hidden. But there's this one guy that's been causing a bit of mischief around Z City. He's been mostly subtle about it, but I feel that's about to change." "I want to hone my powers and use them for good to fight the supernatural." "Well, that's a pretty tall goal. But you're gonna need to train up if you wanna fight off supernatural threats." "There's something else I need. A suit. something to disguise myself and create an alter-ego." "Oh, superhero-style, huh? Alright. I'll see what I can design." "Thank's, Dr. Winters. I appreciate it." "Oh, please, call me Erina." And so my training began, and so did my legacy...
