I'd love to see this movie some day!
The poster itself is a manipulation f the latest Saw 3D poster.
Now for a long time Robotnik has just been that fat bad guy that Sonic the Hedgehog always beats. However in the Fleetway and Archie comics (at least some of them) as well as the SATAM television series he was more then just a comic villain. He was an embodiment of evil, a callous and unfeeling monster who wanted to turn the whole world into mindless metal. In my own interpretation of the Sonic mythos I can see him being an almost tragic figure.
Consider. Robotnik is a human and the humans were driven underground by the alien Xorda, according to the comics and animated show. He grew up living in squalor, forced to do manuel labor like the rest of his kind, not allowed the luxury of personal identity or recognition; a cog in the machine. In my imagination he was the rebel before Sonic ever was. While the humans fought a losing war with the mobian mutants he used his genius to design weapons and devices to ultimately defeat them and save his people. If there was a Robotnik movie he'd be its hero, a person who came from nothing and using his wits rose to become the savior of his species.
Where did he go wrong?
In my opinion there hasn't been a lot of movies about villains. Either its about anti-heroes or heroes, but few films devoted to what makes a good person turn to evil. Robotnik in my imagined scenario was not a cruel man, not particularly greedy, not driven by zealous anger, not resentful of his ill treatment. He wasn't vengeful or insane.
What drove him to evil was despair.
He decided mankind was a failed experiment, that living things were insufficient. He decided the old ways of loyalty and morality were broken and needed to be fixed.
And in the process of trying to create a paradise he turned the world to hell.
In trying to be a hero, he became the worst dictator the world would ever know.
See why I want to see this movie? ;p
