A neighbor and good friend of mine wanted to pay me to put my skills to use and handed me a 3/4ths wrench and wanted a knife from it.
I had asked what kind of style he'd want and he explained a double edged sort of dagger.
I think I got tricked into making a kunai or something, because it ended up looking like that half way through the forging.
When I gave it to him he was absolutely impressed, completely wowed.
He told me it looked exactly like he imagined it as if I pulled the picture right from his head.
Hearing that always makes me feel very pleased and accomplished not just as a smith, but as an artist.
Being able to bring to life an idea trapped in another person's head.
About the knife- I actually have no idea if I heat treated it properly. I don't quite know exactly what alloy this wrench is, since it only is sold as "Vanadium steel", so I made sure to tell my friend that I wouldn't know how well it'd hold up to use and abuse, but he didn't mind one bit. He liked it for the looks.
The knife was mostly forged to finish, meaning the only grinding done was the shine and the sharpening. The whole shape was achieved at the anvil with a hammer.
