Fragments of lost souls, sacrificed to the Vermillion. In some ways, its a wretched fate. But in other ways... its a new chance for those fallen.
Plenty of lore on the page. As with any of my custom species and the like, feel free to create your own instances of them!

Theoretically, yes. One alone cant. Two may have a chance but the person would have to allow it, and even then it isnt always the most stable. But a large colony of, say, eight, probably could. The way I would see it is the possessed person's form would take on the staticky appearance, but fainter, and the Splinters' eyes would appear as normal on the form. When the host is in control, their original eyes are normal, but when the Splinters have control, the host's eyes become akin to the Splinters' themselves.
Ive got an adoptable soon which builds off of what if a character had a particularly powerful Splinter bonded to them, actually. :p

Yup! The mentioned 12 is pretty uncommon, as beyond that it starts to strain the colony. 13 and more, they would start to get unstable, and would fall apart if too active. Beyond 15, the instability would be so bad they'd fall apart after only a few minutes. Beyond 18... Nothing works. so, for a steady colony, 12. For unstable, 15? Maybe? Other factors could make these numbers vary, but it would take the power of a Vilacus (A Vermillion diety, basically) to force more than 18 together.
