I had a LOT of fun drawing this guy, charismatic devil/demon that he is. Apart from those backwards thumbs, that was admittedly a bit of a headache :'D.

I'm not sure how comfortable I am with a character I have been DM'ing as so evil being so hot. :O
Really great job on this! Love seeing it in the higher resolution!
(Technically, to the best of my knowledge, a rakshasa is neither a demon nor a devil in D&D lore, but is a different type of fiend, the umbrella category that includes demons, devils, and other things along those lines.)

I've always been curious, I actually work with Magic cards everyday as a job and always wondered how they come up with the ideas for the artwork? Do they give you a prompt and you just kinda follow along the lines of it? This looks incredible, can't wait to start seeing the cards coming through ^-^ 💙
Because he is a fiend in D&D Lore, more speicifically in the Forgotten Reaalms Lore of the Nine Hells of Avernus. And the Rakshasa have this kind of anatomy in the lore.
I am playing the Adventurer's League Campaign with a group right now and there he is a recurring NPC as they travel with his Emporium.
"No Violence
No Spells
No Exceptions!"
are his rules for his emporium, it's neutral ground.

Just saw this guy revealed. A commander in colors I don't use and encourages me to be an ass? Was already planning on building him. The fact he's drawn by one of my favorite artists working for MTG just makes it better.
Also wow this art looks so nice blown up. It's really hard to notice some of the details, like the devils in the background, when shrunk down to fit in an art box. Or that amazing devil monkey thing in his booth.

up to 3rd edition of D&D their hands' palms show outwards. they have the means to conceal this, but not all bother. some rakshasa (the spelling seems to shift between the editions) also have monkey heads. if I recall right their cathegory is evil outsider. :)
doesn't matter here, of course, it's what I recall from 30 years of rolling them dice. ;)
great art here, love the smug expression, very convincing. that coin surely is cursed; if not, the offering surely is. ;) the hands look properly strange, too.
of course, there is a lot going on in the background. ^^ there seems to be a dragonborn talking to another quaasit?
IMO they should use this art for the monstrous manual. ^^

I've been using a Rakshasa as a "friendly" creature in one of my D&D games. Now that you gave me such a beautiful piece of art, you graciously made me uncomfortable about making him so treacherous as he is one of the BBEGs.
And everytime I see your art popping at my Submissions menu, I can't hide a smile.
