I couldn't bear to look at the giant outside for much longer. With its device off, it slumped back and eventually laid down. Its eyes were on the truck outside, but that must be only curiosity; I doubt it cares if it works.
Granted, going to sleep again didn't seem like a good alternative. I've only briefly glanced around this place and figured what better time than now to explore my options.
The room was small, and the only things to stand out were a radio system and a fridge. While I doubted if these things had power at first when I opened the small mini-fridge, cold air met my hand, and a light flicked on. I guess whatever generator or battery this place had still had some juice in it...
There wasn't much, a few beers, bottles of water, and some cold burritos. But practically anything this could have held would have been good.
Taking out a burrito and water, I hesitated and looked at the beer. What better time to drink than the apocalypse? But then again, I'd better not drink, knowing that giant is still outside...
The burrito tasted fine, although I was never a fan of them. The clear plastic crumpled and crinkled when I tore it off. Every slight noise made me wince, as I expected the rodent to hear it. Here and there, I glanced to the window as if expecting its massive red eye to be staring at me.
With the radar dish ears, It might be able to hear it... Even outside...
Hobbling over to the radio, I felt the worn chair before sitting down. Adjusting awkwardly not to strain my leg in the process. It would take me a while to get used to limping everywhere. Maybe I can find a crutch or use a stick. Anything would be better, I suppose.
Adjusting the various dials, I was met with a static station after static station. Constantly I had to check the equipment to make sure I wasn't missing anything. There was a battery this was connected to, which wouldn't last forever...
So if this is going to be helpful, it has to be operational soon.
H.A.M. Hard Ass Motherfucker, is an apt name for this level of jank equipment. But for when the going gets tough, plenty of people worldwide have these things for communication.
I couldn't seem to receive anything in changing channels every few seconds. Although occasionally, I could hear split words within the static. However, they were utterly broken and unrecognizable.
It gave me hope; at least there were people out there trying to make contact with others. Hell, maybe one of the caravaneers even survived evacuation...
Hours passed while I changed stations, eventually winding around to rechecking stations. The mic, I assumed at least, worked. But I was too worried about alerting the aliens to where I was. No doubt, lines of communication like this would be a priority for the monsters.
I tried nudging back the thought that just outside was a massive mouse. It saved my life, which I could barely accept. But its reasoning still bothered me.
If I was some sort of prisoner, why wouldn't I be locked away in some cage or cell? Even if it didn't have one, why would it let me go alone inside this home? For all it knows, there could be guns or explosives inside.
Pretty stupid for a jailer...
What if it meant well? I shouldn't dance with the devil, no matter how nice it seems...
It doesn't matter; I'll leave it the first chance I get.

Very nice story, I can't wait to know the rest and if they end up getting along, because even if it adds tension and humor, that it changes compared to the other story, I find it a shame that it can't speak. I'll see for when we go back to Alice's side, that she finds a raynar translator and manages to talk, even if it's just for a few seconds... or that an event reinforces Warren's idea, that she is an ally
