One thing I can never understand with flying mounts is the saddles people use. It's generally always a horse style. Fine if you're riding a horse, it's not that far if you fall, however when flying...
The only person I can think of at the moment who made a lot of references to straps to secure a rider was Anne Mccaffrey in her Pern series.
