Chapter 48: Redneck Rides
Breakfast was good, really good. At one point Sam had to remind Kate not to pick up the plate less people see a floating ghost plate in the air.
The problem was they hadn’t come up with any real ideas for sneaking back into the city by the time Shannon was collecting their plates.
“Whats wrong kiddos” Shannon said, “You two seem altogether to down for having just ate my pancakes”
“The food was great ma’am” Sam explained, “but we have a bit of an emergency and need to get into the city and…”
“WOAH WOAH. You heard whats going on there? Valborg’s on fire. Some sort of terrorist attack or something. The news was vague. You two do NOT want to be going there right now no sir.”
“Not really an option. Even if we have to walk, we have to get into he city.”
Shannon groaned, “Look if this is about friend or family that couldn’t get out I.. I get it ok, its still dangerous, you shouldn’t do and DEFNIITILY” She leaned in to Sam’s face to glare at him, “Definitely not while dragging my cousin into harm’s way.”
Mary cut in, “Cuz, I know its dangerous but we… we really do need to its… its important, and i…”
“Oh no. I get you may be all smitten with your little boy toy here…”
“It’s not…”
“…but YOU have no reason to go back…”
“Shannon I …”
“I get that you got yourself a place in town for the time being but its just a place, heck you can stay at my place if you need.”
“SHANNON” Mary stood up and got loud, “Look its hard to explain, but we have to get to the city. Really.”
“But..”
“Cuz…”
“Fiddlesticks” Shannon rubbed her forehead and paced, “Look getting to the city isn’t hard, but again its dangerous right now…”
This time it was Sam’s turn to stand, somewhat nervously, “Ma’am I promise I’ll do whatever I can to keep her safe.”
Shannon went back to glaring at him, “You bloody well better, young man.”
Sam squeaked and nodded.
“Back to the point.” Mary spoke up again, “You said it wouldn’t be hard… But the roads are all closed
and the forest between here and there….”
“Honey did you even grow up in this here town?”
Shannon went ‘on break’ and half dragged the pair outside. Kate followed from a safe distance to avoid
her steps being heard or accidentally bumping into someone. Shannon let them a few blocks away then
turned into a de facto residential area which was mostly random double-wides and a few shacks and an
old barn or two with no real paved roads between them. They turned off towards one of said barns and
Shannon started fiddling with the lock.
“Shannon are we breaking into the Delucas’ barn?”
“Oh shush, they aint barely use this place, since old bob broke his legs good that one time.”
“Broke his legs… doing what?”
“See for yourself.” Shannon unlatched and pulled the barn door open revealing an interesting collection
of partially rusted motorcycles and ATVs
“Oh my…”
“Ya” Sam agreed, “Though these look like they were ‘heavily used’ last decade.”
“Oh they may have more spare parts than new, but they should work.” Shannon asserted, “Ya wanna
get yaself somewhere while avoiding the roads, you use these.”
“Will they give us the keys?” Sam asked.
“Keys in em.”
“What? What if someone.”
“Boy they probably worth more as scrap than the are with gas in em”
“I.. suppose… Uh Thanks.”
“No problem. Now I gotta get back to work, and remember you protect your girl, you hear? If Mary gets
hurt, I’ll be sure to hurt you twice as much.” Shannon said cheerfully.
“Uh. Y-yes ma’am” Sam said nervously as Shannon trotted back to the diner.
The pair started to look over the rides for ones that looked slightly less rusted out, while Kate waited till
Shannon was well out of earshot before she burst out laughing.
“Holy mistress?” Mary asked, alarmed.
“Oh sorry sorry” Kate said between chuckles, “I just.. its just.. Sam looked so SCARED of the bouncy
waitress, and Mary, you looked so cute every time she implied you two were dating.”
Sam blushed but looked a little nervous, Mary just looked down.
“Oh really, now. It was funny and I just had to get that out I guess.” Kate said still smiling.
“I guess it was a little bit” Sam agreed with a small grin.
Mary didn’t say anything.
“What’s wrong Mary? I’m just trying to keep at least a little cheerful. Sure, I don’t know how to ride these things, but we’ll figure it out. Things starting to look up.”
“Lets. Just” Mary sighed, “Focus on this. If you don’t know what you’re doing you should get an ATV, less likely to kill yourself.”
Kate was going to speak again but stopped herself. Something was clearly bothering Mary, but she couldn’t figure out what it was, and it really wasn’t the time for it. That and she was suddenly feeling a bubbling feeling in her stomach.
“Oh.. Oh my.” Kate barely found a random used oil barrel in time before her stomach contents were no longer contained.
“MISTRESS” Mary shouted rushing over, “Are you ok. Are you ill? Was there something wrong with the food? Can I do anything to help you?
“ugh” Kate shuddered spitting some giblets out, “I don’t know… the food was good its just.. I’m not sure what happened.”
“But. Are you sick? A being of heaven shouldn’t be able to get sick should you? Sam we have to do something.”
Sam leaned on his chosen dirt bike, “How exactly? A doctor? Who would see empty space just like I do right now?”
“I’ll be fine” Kate said and stood back up, trying to suppress some tremmors currently wracking her body. “I’ll just focus on riding for now.”
“But… but…” Mary protested.
“No time Mary, I’ll work through it, I’ll get better.”
“She actually might” Sam offered, “She was beaten and poisoned bad enough to be out for over a week, and she JUST woke up today. She doesn’t have the strength to fly yet. Maybe her stomach is just out of whack like her muscles. That said you don’t sound alright YET.”
“I’ll be fine…”
“You sure? It does take some coordination to ride these things.”
“Damn” Kate said shaking her head and looking down ant her shaking fingers, “I suppose I could ride doubles.”
“Hop on and we’ll get go….” Sam started before Mary cut him off.
“Oh no NO NO NO” Mary stamped her foot.
“What? Why?”
“You’re a guy darn it, and she!” Mary waved at what to Sam was empty space, “She’s got no CLOTHES. No way is she riding doubles with you!”
“Mary I wasn’t suggesting… I was just… It wasn’t THAT!”
“I can ride with you then, Mary” Kate said.
Mary reddened at that suggestion, “I.. well I.. I .. suppo… we could do…”
“Dammit Mary, If I am to bloody shaky to ride alone then I got ride with ONE OF YOU, so pick a ride and let’s go!” Kate snapped.
Mary squeaked and picked her ride. Kate followed her and got on behind her. Kate could feel almost every muscle in Mary’s body stiffen when Kate touched her. The sudden shift in Mary’s demeanor made Kate wonder if she should have been gentler with her words.
“Look.. uh.. sorry I yelled, but we…”
“You’re right” Mary said and turned the key, “We don’t have time and I just need to deal with it.”
The machine sound like a tortured hippo grunting into life, but it did eventually turn over and start to chug. Sam took the lead with his bike and Mary puttered along behind him with Kate holding onto her from behind. Mary was gritting her teeth and to Kate she seemed way more tense than was necessary just yet. They were going into danger, of course but that wouldn’t be for a while as they navigate their way thought the forest towards the city.
Mary was somewhat hard to figure out in general. At first, she was practically worshipping Kate. Then she blushed hard enough for Kate to wonder if Mary thought that she was hot. Though she had a similar reaction to Sam. She seemed ashamed of herself all the while as well.
Either way that could all wait. Whatever Mary was actually thinking, or feeling was less important than people actually dying. Kate made a mental note to talk to her about it later before looking ahead, willing the city to come into view.
“Hold it together for now, Atasi. I’m coming.”
