SUMMARY: In the heart of the Great Depression, one man lights a candle against the darkness.
I actually had this finished near the end of August, but I held off on posting it here because it was destined for the Oklacon 2010 conbook. Now that said convention has come and gone (and was amazing, BTW), I feel like it's okay to post it here.
Incidentally, I was told in a comment on my last submission that .TXT files work better for some people. As a result, I'm submitting this as a regular text file. I also have it in .RTF format if that works better. Should I submit TXT? RTF? Both? Drop me a comment and let me know!

The advantage to .txt submission is that people don't have to separately download the file and open it to read your story.
You lose the fun formatting options when you do that, but I guess some people are lazy, or it's just too inconvenient, to download.
Incidentally, nice story. Really very enjoyable. You captured the feeling of making hope in hopeless times very well. I thought the beginning was a little slow. Not much, and not enough to make me put it down, of course. Excellent work, and congratulations on making the con book!
