This poem was something I wrote up a couple of days back in a flash of inspiration
For some background information, the lamb is a symbol used in cemeteries to represent the burial place of a child; whether a baby, an infant, or a child. In older cemeteries, it's all-too common to see tombstones made out of marble with a small lamb laying atop the stone; marking the place where a young child, claimed so young, is buried.
This idea for this poem came to me with my most recent trip to Oakwood Cemetery. There is a section of the cemetery where a large number of babies and young kids were buried; where the lamb is carved into statues or into the tombstones to mark their final resting place. The image of these tombstones stuck to me, along with what they represent, and I felt moved to write this poem in memory of those lost.
