Once a vassal for a ruthless daimyō, Toriko had only ever known this single name, meaning "Captive" or "Prisoner". It was what he had been called by the daimyō's men since his childhood being raised by his fellow vassals.
Since vassals were forbidden to become swordsmen, he spent years honing his skills with poles and reeds under the cover of night until eventually one day he as able to fashion a wakizashi from the femur of another vassal who was beaten to death, assassinate the Daimyō with it and slaughtered the samurai under his service. He slew dozens of trained samurai outfitted with armor and steel katanas, wearing no armor of his own and wielding only a wakizashi made from bone.
After freeing his fellow vassals he became a rōnin wandering the region looking for others in a situation like he was, fellow vassals and peasants denied their freedom. Eventually the shogun became so afraid of him that he coerced a Celebi to send him into the future and eliminate him as a threat, since no way of attempting to kill him seemed to work. He sees this failure to kill the shogun as his greatest, since as far as he knows there isn’t any way to return to the past. He struggles to adapt to the modern era.\
