Oh yeah xDD
Very cute and I love meganium's design..but yeah they definitely got the short end of the stick, not only how they match up with the gyms but even their stats and movesets weren't built to be offensive.
(Though somehow I still managed to have a meganium on my heartgold team as a kid o.o That was back when I didn't know what I was doing though and an entire team based on hm slaves so I could travel anywhere easily xDD)

The thing is Meganium doesn't fill a niche. Grass Pokemon already have a lot of weaknesses, but good ones like Meowscarada and Sceptile make up for it in having move variety and the ability to actually hit hard.
Meganium, and to a lesser extent, Serperior in Gen 5 don't have that. I would wager Serperior is much better than Meganium, but like Meganium, has 0 move variety.

Oh yeah. Meganium look like they're meant to be defensive or at least supportive, but the problem is even with high defenses and defensive moves they still have a lot of weaknesses.
Agreed, serperior is built very similarly but can at least fight back and doesn't have as big a disadvantage in its region (though it'll still struggle against...well at least half of the gyms and only be useful against Clay and, in the sequels, Marline).

Yeah I know what Meganium is used for. It's similar to Venasaur in today's competitive scene. But, why would you actually use/need a staller for an in-game story team?
I picked Snivy in Gen 5 for my first run. Found him lacking, and restarted after I beat the game for Oshawott. Frankly, Samurott is so absurdly good. It's a special and physical fighter with a wide variety of moves. Then again water is a powerful type tbh.

Yeah exactly. The way to go there is to just hit em hard and hit em fast, neither of which meganium is particularly good at.
Yeah I hear oshawott/samurott being considered the best Unova starter and look forward to trying them out for my next Black playthrough. Plus Unova doesn't have a lot of water types to choose from, though I'd say palpitoad is good to get for Elisa and Clay.

Thing is water types -always- have an advantage when it comes to a starter. Because all water type starters can get ice beam. Or in Gen 2 Feraligatr's case, get Ice Punch, which immediately counters one of your only 2 weaknesses, grass.
Swampert in Gen 3 being a ground type only gives him the grass weakness, to which, as said before, just give him ice beam. Then you're good.

Shame about ice types though. They're not very common in any game and by the time you get to them appearing, you don't need it because you'll generally have a water type with an ice move. This leads to ice types being regarded as one of the weakest types in the game. They fill very little roles that a water type with ice beam/punch can't already fill.
Yeah, but thinking about it earlier it kinda makes sense.
New eeveelutions were introduced in gens two and four, in addition to a evolutions for a bunch of other mons too, then sylveon came to help introduce the new fairy type, so not much opportunity to introduce new ones other than for the sake of doing so (unless we count the evolved forms of regional variants as new evos for old mons but then eeveelutions wouldn't quite fit in as well).

Wow. Yeah I remember not using eeveelutions that much simply because their level up moveset is appalling to be brutally frank, learning few good moves and taking a long time to learn them, even sylveon is stuck with fairy wind and draining kiss until level 37 *checks* ...or level FIFTY. Geezus...
Considering there aren't a ton of powerful bug types to begin with. There's a few, but not a lot.
There's a handful of powerful moves though. Bug Buzz. First Impression. Leech Life is now like, base 80 power. Used to be base 20 prior to Gen 7. U-turn is another good bug move.

Making zubat no longer useless...kinda. Because leech life was so powerful they replaced it with Absorb (which actually would've been handy in older gens to grind against the many geodude found in the same areas as them until they learned Bite and Wing Attack to take on other foes).
