Yeah don't mess with me and Hoenn, lol. That is my home. What I grew up with when I first started the games. I never got on board with the Sinnoh hype. My Gen 4 experience was Heartgold. I later went back and got a Pearl version, but Sinnoh to me was just an 'eh' region. Not bad, but not really good either.
I see^^ My first game was actually Pokemon Diamond, because I was a kid and wanted to wait until I was 10 to start my pokemon journey like Ash did xD; Which ended up taking place during the Diamond and Pearl series and as I had no experience with the games I actually thought I could look around for a caterpie to be my first pokemon! X'D
Gen 4 did change a lot for the game. Such as a revamp for the special/physical system, which in turn either helped a lot of Pokemon like Absol and Mightyena, while hurting a few such as Sceptile.
What I mean is that Absol and Mightyena's Bite and Crunch are dark moves. In gen 3 all Dark attacks were special, but those 2 Pokemon were physical fighters. The revamp buffed those moves for them, but in Gen 3, all grass moves were special. So Sceptile's own signature move, Leaf Blade, turned physical and was nerfed since Sceptile is a special attacker.

Exactly, plus they don't learn a lot of attack moves, at least not easily (don't get Bite until level 13 or something and until then you're stuck with Tackle. And after that it's aaages before Crunch). Oh yeah intimidate! Yeah mightyena are still one of my favorite pokemon and I love being able to use on in a playthrough, just wish it weren't so difficult at times.
I mean I usually teach my Mightyena Secret Power when you get the TM for the secret bases thing. It's actually a good move for Mightyena in Gen 3. Normal moves are all physical, so a base 70 normal attack on Mightyena is actually solid.
That said, Poochyena and Mightyena got massively buffed in the Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire playthrough. The first Poochyena you catch via the sneak tutorial has a fang move based on your starter. I had Treecko, so that Poochyena had Thunder Fang, a decent electric attack, at level 5.

Ah yeah! I actually try to use Dig for the same reason, plus practical use outside of battle.
Was actually wanting to say that xD Same happened with me, and I kept mine with me through the whole playthrough because of that strength. Even used him against Wallace with my Sceptile!

Yeah I dislike two-turn attacks too, especially those that need to charge like solar beam. Fly and dig are good to have but not my first choice of attacks if I can help it. Luckily that's pretty situational though, not every opponent is gonna have access to them, at least not in game.
