You know, after going off on his rant, he discovers that all the boys become donkeys, and then just passes it off as a relatively normal, albeit alarming, happenstance. Seriously, he discovered that all the boys of the island became donkeys and his first line from there was "So THAT'S what happened to them." as though the mystery was solved in its entirety. Apparently he was already familiar with the concept of boys being transmogrified.

... then again, this is a world where foxes and cats chill around the street and he himself is a talking cricket, so methinks animal transformation might be more of a commonplace occurrence that one might think. Sort of makes one question their origins...

But yeah. Imagine Lampwick starting to transform as he messes with the cricket. That would be a heck of an interaction.
