Few records were remaining from the time when the Seven Worlds were connected with the portals. Even fewer actually told from these nameless people that built these portals, before seemingly vanishing from the face of the Seven Worlds. Consequently, only a very few names of these portal-builders were ever recovered from the records, but there was exactly one that appeared again and again: Constantin Dawnsong.
He was definitely a portal-builder, an arctic fox and apparently had some important role in the construction of the entire network of portals, though which one exactly was still disputed among historians. The portal-builders never seemed all that different to everyone else in the Seven Worlds. They spoke the same languages, up to the same dialects, wore the same clothes, had the same habits as the locals, and always said that they were just a small group travellers passing by. In a way, this was not a lie, they arrived out of nowhere, built those portals, and then vanished again in just a very few years.
Along the way, they somehow taught the Seven Worlds a common language and a basic if still archaic technology. They did all of this without ever causing any kind of conflict, envy or even mischief, in fact, they always seemed to able to care for themselves, and never used anyone else's resources. And yet, the only name that ever persisted, the only constant in all of this, in some kind of strange humour of history was Constantin Dawnsong.
It was considered unlikely that Constant Dawnsong had left any offspring, he vanished just like all the other Portal-Builders. Nonetheless, the name "Dawnsong",
reappeared multiple times throughout history, without exactly being able to identify a cause. Yet the name alone always carried a certain mystique of a portal-builder, embedded into the collective memory of the Seven Worlds.
Somewhere among history, Mirror-foxes appeared, founded families, then seemingly disappeared again for a few generations before it became apparent that being a mirror-fox was an engineered, but mostly dormant genetic trait that was now woven into the genes of vulpinoid offspring of that first mirror-fox generation.
History continued, the mirror-fox genes were passed along far and wide into the Seven Worlds, and now, a few years into the 22nd century, a certain mirror-fox inherited the "Dawnsong"-family name.
Nox always had a knack for magic, even before his mirror-fox features became visible during his adolescence. It probably did affect his personal connection to the arcane arts as well, though it would be hard to determine how exactly. However, during his journey on becoming a cursebreaker, he had to realise that certain corners of his soon-to-be profession had rather old-fashioned views.
His studies had lead him to a magocratic enclave on the world of Akarion, which by itself was a complicated issue for him. For once, as mirror-foxes had first been encountered on this world, their exact origin remaining a mystery, however some considered them invaders to their world.
This rather hostile opinion was not exactly helping him, but the real issue became apparent whenever he had to show his papers, or state his name for whatever reason. Whenever he watched the eyes wandering towards him, then back to his passport, then back to him, he felt the unspoken (and sometimes not so unspoken) accusation: How in the Seven Worlds could an aberrant like him bear such a prominent name?
Engineered subspecies were not unheard of, even in the ancient ages. Deities wanting to have their own favoured species, power-drunk sorcerers attempting to prove their ability and everything in between and more, there were a lot of reasons how subspecies came to be, but most of the times their origin and sometimes their engineered purpose was well documented.
The first generation of Mirror-foxes however just appeared out of nowhere, noone claiming their creation, and without a clear set of unusual traits, apart from their odd pelt-colouring, they always had a certain aura of mystique, which in turn often came with a good portion of distrust.
After some time Nox was sick of it. The same questions, the same unspoken (and sometimes explicit) accusations, all the time. Gazing at himself through a mirror, he made a decision to cut all these question short: With a bit of magic he coloured a rather broad strand of his hair in the colours of a sunrise, or dawn. And he would also change his usual attire to mostly black clothes, with a bit of a white highlight, which later would become a white tie. "Yes, my name is Dawnsong, yes i am a mirror-fox, no my chest-pattern is none of your business.", he'd say without actually speaking a single word.
It took a fair bit of confidence to actually see this through, but given some time it became his usual signature outfit.
It sure shortened some of discussion, a few even applauded his courage, mostly it was ignored and sometimes it made things worse.
At the end, he was able to finish his basic studies at this enclave, but he quickly realized they would not be able or willing to offer him the way he needed to advance his abilities, and thus, he needed to go elsewhere...
The first of three parts(at least that is what i planned) of a bit of world- and character-building. I guess the colours of his hair already had an obvious reason, so i expanded on that a little.
The other two parts have been outlined, but i still must get to actually write them down. Judging by the pace i upload pieces here, that might take a while...
