I am ever amused by the courtship ritual. In my father's day (and in the country I might add) on the wedding night the groom's friends would gather to sing outside the bedroom window - and would do so until the groom paid them to go away.
A ritual from my time that seems to have gone away (at least in the big city) was the bride and groom would have a parade of vehicles driving around town honking their horns for all they were worth - the bridal car would also have the myriad of tin cans tied to the bumper and 'just married' soaped onto the back window.

Ha, I'd not heard of that first one! It could almost be considered extortion, depending on how badly they sing ;)
The latter I saw quite a bit in Turkey - always a spectacle! Our digging group even got invited to a wedding celebration in the tiny two-donkey town where we stayed during the excavation. There was lots of singing and dancing, and all the while the town elders sat around a fire grumbling about 'dern kid's these days' and drinking the strongest tea imaginable. We even got to fire some rifles into the air! I wonder how come that's never caught on here... oh, right, the bullets come back down XD Suffice to say, it's a good thing courtship is celebrated and gives us an excuse to have fun!
