✨💖 SUPPORT ME ON KO-FI! 💖✨
Sneaking in another MerMay piece before the month is over (don’t worry, there’s more where this came from!)—please enjoy this fan art of NieR Replicant, a game I finished recently that has quickly climbed my list of all-time favorite video games! Be sure to check out my post on Instagram for an analysis of the character Louise, NieR Replicant’s own tribute to The Little Mermaid! 🧜♀️
My introduction to the NieR series was with NieR:Automata, a game I first played in the fall of 2020. Some friends had recommended the game to me and I’d enjoyed the few NieR tracks I’d heard on various lo-fi video game playlists I used to listen to, so I was primed for a good time when I first booted it up. Almost immediately, Nier:Automata totally captured my interest with its stunning visuals, its brilliant soundtrack, its profound story, and its complex and compelling characters—to this day, Automata remains one of my favorite video game experiences.
At the time, though, I wasn’t aware that Automata was actually the sequel to the 2010 cult-classic NieR. Considering just how thoroughly NieR:Automata met and surpassed every expectation I had for it, my interest was quite piqued when it was announced NieR would be getting a full remake for the current console generation. Just like Automata before (after?) it, NieR (Replicant, borrowing the subtitle from its Japan-exclusive 2010 release) did not disappoint, offering an experience that I will describe here simply as beautiful (I started keeping a tally of how many times the ~60 hour game made me tear up, happy or sad—I stopped counting after 15!). If you’re looking for a new game to play, then let me be the one to recommend NieR—both Replicant and Automata—like my friends did for me in the past. As long as you can tolerate a little bleakness (trust me, NieR does get BLEAK), I assure that you will not be let down!
