This is Sayble and Pasea, a mousefolk monk and his ghost boyfriend respectively. Back story based very loosely on aesop's fable about the mouse and the lion.

-Sayble is halted by a lion tabaxi/leonin on the road called Pasea.
-Tries to rob them but mouse has only valuable medicine for a family member, begs them to spare them in that maybe someday, somehow, the debt is repaid.
-Paseo takes pity and lets them go.
-Later Paseo is in prison for banditry and thanks to Sayble's vouching for him gets free.
-Team up and do cool stuff for a while, Sayble trains Paseo's heart while Paseo trains Sayble's body.
-Paseo is killed by Bad Guy™ while he's defending Sayble.
-Sayble manifests Sayble as his astral self and they stay a team of sorts, continuing to do adventure stuff.
