In times of plenty, they become numerous. One man reported that they would gather in great numbers near his tent in the wilds and there were pocket mice among them. The kangaroo rats were very trusting, allowing him to pick them up their tails and would patiently await him putting them down. One, placed on the palm of his hand, proceeded to eat a seed also placed there. He then jumped off -not to escape, but to KICK a pocket mouse! Pocket mice are NOT used to being kicked by kangaroo rats , and this one ran off squeaking ! Then the kangaroo rat jumped back into the man's hand ! Kangaroo rats fight by kicking each other.
