What Dev is saying there is actually a good character concept; to have communication with that which does not exist and has not existed. Many things have existed up to now, but endless more things haven't existed. The power to communicate with what does not exist and has not exist,... nobody would be strong enough for it. Their psyche would be completely lost with the weight of it, and the person who was there before would be gone forever. The only person left would be an aimless body who may live among what exists, but is trapped with what hasn't and doesn't exist; talking to things that aren't really there. Maybe you can work that into Dev's back-story? Up to you.
