No argument there, but it IS a good argument for having backups available. For the record, my family always breastfeeds the little ones, and stores any excess for later use.

Mom had to do the evaporated milk thing for my brother and I, she just didn't produce. funny, I remember as a small child there was always a partial bottle of light Karo Syrup in the pantry, never saw it used for anything. Now I know what it was for. Ended up looking in her old cookbooks - formula recipes right there. Meta Givens books, first published in the 1930s.

You may recall the toilet paper shortage of a couple years back. Plenty of TP available now, but...

Well, this is what happens when you depend on other countries to produce items necessary in this country, items which we could just as easily produce here and (as a consequence) create jobs here.

Nah, this was the reverse. FDA refused to allow imports, put policies in place that generated an oligopoly, and then spent months dithering when the biggest of that oligopoly had a contaminated plant. They did an emergency review and are now allowing European imports (their standards were higher than ours to begin with, so now there are pointed questions about why they were banned in the first place.)

I do security work for a couple of state welfare agencies - one deals with children. There is basically a govt monopoly on Formula - certain brands are favored. I've seen a mother get yelled at by a 3rd party care provider because she had the "Wrong Formula" and had her visit with her infant daughter ended after 5 minutes. Even the state workers were going wtf over that one. I remember when the recall hit a few months back - that mother had problems finding the prefered brand even at that time...

Oh, I wasn't just referring to baby formula. All it would take is for the country in question to decide that they won't export to the US any longer and since about 90+% of items sold in this country are manufactured there, guess what, we're effed.
