The countryside could not stay submerged in darkness forever. There indeed again came light, there indeed again came flowers. Dawn may not have brought with it the guarantees that it would hold, but it brought with it a sense of relief and respite. It gave time to gather flowers. To appreciate the struggles that had been overcome. To think not of battle or of strife, but simply of the beauty of that liminal day. The lashing winds had ceased, the storms but a whisper in a near-cloudless sky, and from there the jackal simply takes a breath. For a time -- for the first since the onset of those dark hours -- he smiles.
