Nightstein is hoping that the conductor isn't slumped over the throttle or worse comes to worse, the safety valve. A safety valve is meant to keep the pressure in the boiler stable. If the pressure in the boiler exceeds that of what the safety valve is rated at, it, "the safety valve" will shoot open thus decreasing the pressure in the boiler. People sometimes tamper the safety to gain more power out of the locomotive, HOWEVER this action is dangerous because it is a major factor in causing a boiler explosion. Sorry about this history lesson, I just LOVE trains and this picture having a train in it... It's so hard to not go into more detail!!!!
