In brief, Guy Fawkes was the muscle for a plot to blow up Protestant King James along with England's Parliament, so as to replace James with a Catholic king. (Thus they would have replaced the Protestant tyranny over English Catholics with a Catholic tyranny over English Protestants.) The conspirators rented a room under the House of Lords and filled it with barrels of gun powder; depending on your source, between 20 and 60. One of the conspirators was concerned for the safety of Catholic members, and so sent a warning letter to one of them, advising him to keep himself and his fellow Catholics away from Parliament on that day. Instead, the member turned the letter over to James, who had the grounds and building searched, just in case. It happened to be Fawkes's turn to guard the bomb; he was caught, overpowered and arrested. Now this is where things get a little muddy. Fawkes revealed the names of the other conspirators, but he did so under torture and this casts some doubt on the whole thing. It's generally accepted that you can make anybody say anything under torture whether it's true or not. So was there really a conspiracy, if so were any of the men Fawkes named really in on it? Who can say. At any rate, the whole gang was condemned to be hung, drawn and quartered. Fawkes jumped to his death from the scaffold, however and escaped James's wrath, if not his vengeance. (The rest were hung until they were almost dead, cut down, their bellies cut open and their innards pulled out, coated with pitch and set on fire, then they were hacked to pieces as it burned. Their heads were the last to be cut off, which were mounted on pikes as a warning.)
V (for Vendetta) used Guy Fawkes's image for his own purposes, of course; to destroy a government that really was corrupt and tyrannical from top to bottom, (in the movie.)

Is it wrong that my first thought, instead of thinking of that blowing up, or flying him off to who knows where, was that it would just disappear? Then there would be one of those scenes like in cartoon when someone swallows an explosive, and his belly would expand and he'd cough up smoke...

btw this reminds me of a roadrunner cartoon where the coyote tries to chase the roadrunner several times with a rocket and always fails
Or the one with Sylvester and Tweety where the latter is on a tree inside a dog pound and Sylvester packs a rocket on his back, which sets his fur on fire when he starts it ^^
