It was the Playstation 1 equivilent of the Dreamcast's VMU.
It was a essentially a memory card with a screen. A few games would allow you to send a little bit of game data to it so you could play more when you were away.
FF8 used it, I believe, to improve Boko your baby chocobo. I don't think it ever managed to escape Japan, sadly. It certainly never hit Europe. So everyone had a crap boko in FF8 =B

It really didn't, but still like 2 games came out in US WITH support for it like it would, As you said FFVIII, and then R4: Ridge Racer Type 4. A few other games also HAD support, but you had to use a Gameshark to 'unlock' it once again. Only one to get one back in the day thought was via importing, but if you did, beyond the starting menu and stuff, the US games still where in english and ran just as well.
