It wasn't really happening where I grew up. The first pride-related event in my state was in 1988 and it was in a big city more than 90 minutes' drive away (and I didn't own my own car at that stage).
I knew about student clubs that probably organized events at my college but not much about what they did. I think after I'd graduated and moved out of state they had a "Gay Ball" or something. Not quite my scene...
I did go to the handful of gay bars in town during those days, if that counts for anything.
