I love Don’t Starved. I’ll admit, I haven’t played it in a while, and I’m not very good at it (I can count the number of times I made it to winter on one hand, and I’ve never made it past winter, period), but I can still appreciate it. I’ve only got the Reign of Giants and Shipwrecked versions (never actually tried the Shipwrecked version; I’ve got enough trouble with Reign of Giants). I know very little of Don’t Starved Together; the sheer number of mechanics and items introduced is staggering. That being said, I do know of one very cute imp. Between a cheery, friendly, fun-loving personality, cool soul mechanics, an oddball sense of humor, and generally speaking like he stepped out of a Dr. Seuss book, Wortox has been a favorite of mine since he was introduced.
I’m pretty sure this is the first picture of him hypnotized. Hopefully I do him justice; writing in rhyme is hard!
Wortox smiled as he dug up a berry bush. This made five, hopefully enough to help the mortals thrive. Willow had a bit of a whoopsie last night, her lighter slipping from her grip in the rain. Bushes burned, survivors scrambled; chaos had reigned in the rain! He and Willow had thought it was hilarious; everyone else, not so much. The burnt bushes had to be replaced, and so he’d volunteered; it wasn’t every day you got a task where nothing died!
His shovel snapped, and Wortox sighed. Well, that was no fun.
He was about to make a new one when he spotted someone in the distance. The imp checked his inventory; yep, he had it!
Wortox smirked as he aimed the slingshot he’d swiped. Wilson wandered unaware, all the better for a scare! A single shot, and such surprise! Fire!
Wilson hummed to himself as he plucked a tuft of grass. It was nice to have a day without some horrible monster attacking. Somehow, all he needed to do was gather some grass, carrots, and sticks; there wasn’t even a need to bring armor! The only risk were the nearby beehives, but they shouldn’t be a problem-
He turned just in time to see a pebble hit a nearby beehive. The scientist sighed as a swarm of bees approached. He had no idea what Walter was thinking, but luckily, he’d come prepared. On the off chance of incensed insects, he had a solution in his backpack.
…Where was his Beekeeper Hat?!
Wilson looked up to see the swarm seemingly triple in size.
…Well, if there had ever been a time to run away screaming…
Wortox snickered as he stepped out from behind a tree; his friends were so much fun! Joining them had been his best decision in ages; not a baby-snatcher in the bunch! They’d welcomed him with open arms, they had, they had! (Minus Maxwell and a rude robot.) There had been so many adventures; sailing the seas, fighting through the Forge, feeding the Gnaw, and trouncing the Terrors from the Terrarium! He’d had some of the best times of his life over these last few years; struggling to survive made an amazing amusement, who knew?
He couldn’t wait for whatever came next.
Wortox pulled out an ax and got to work on the tree; some extra logs WOOD help his friends, hyuyu! Just a few more swings, and-
…Why were the leaves rustling?
He got his answer quickly; Wortox hopped back with a yelp as a snake slithered out of the tree.
To his shock, the snake began to speak; would Wortox be kind enough to pick a different tree? He’d been taking a nap in this one.
Wortox replied with a shaky smile; A talking snake! How hiss-torical. Slumber sweetly, scaly serpent! He’d find another tree.
The snake chuckled; there was no need to be nervous, he meant no harm. The imp seemed like an interesting person to know. How about they introduced themselves? He was Kaa.
Wortox gave his name, and the two struck up a conversation. As it turned out, Kaa was a fan of tricks too, though nothing quite as spectacular as a Bee Mine in someone’s bedroll. He had one in particular he hadn’t used in ages; would Wortox mind if he showed it?
The demon eagerly agreed; he was all for new pranks!
The next thing he knew, a loop of Kaa’s coils fell over his head, covering his eyes in a makeshift blindfold. The snake snickered as the soul-starved flailed about; this was too easy!
Wortox couldn’t help but chuckle; he’d admit it, that was pretty good. He restrained his powers (he’d gotten lots of practice since he met his friends, lucky him!) as he wrapped his claws around the coil. He lifted the loop-
And found himself face to face with a rainbow-eyed snake.
Wortox could only stare in awe at the most beautiful colors he had ever seen. Ring after rainbow ring kept him enraptured, his thoughts, his fears, his attention captured; soothing spirals swept them all away, his little imp-y brain under their sway. Kaa beckoned, and Wortox obeyed, the dazed, delighted demon stepping closer with a smile. The deeper he looked, the better they felt, floaty and fuzzy and oh-so soft as they filled his head.
The snake smiled at the swirly-eyed demon; it was wonderful to see Wortox so happy. How nice of him to trust his new friend, how nice that he could never use his soul-draining on someone he trusted. How his trusted friend Kaa would make him feel even better as a reward.
Wortox beamed as the red glow of his claws disappeared. He couldn’t wait for his new friend’s reward!
He didn’t have to wait long; a scaly tail soon climbed his body, a teasing touch that sent shivers down his spine. Loop after loop wrapped around the demon, stroking and squeezing in ways that made him moan in delight. Wortox’s tail wagged behind him as Kaa’s scratched behind his ear; he’d never felt so good in his life! Swirly whirly colors, cuddly coils, his sweet spot scratched, and he owed it all to his trusted friend Kaa.
The snake began to speak, and the soul-starved soaked up every syllable. How Wortox would trust Kaa to care for him, to take up the burden of his thoughts and free will. How he would be free to have fun, a precious pet to his beloved master. How his only concerns would be his master and his needs – food, protection, entertainment, conversation, anything – and how his master would love him in turn, with coils, with colors, with cuddles. How he didn’t need to worry about his powers; he’d only use them when he wanted to, entranced or otherwise.
Spirals speeding through his eyes, his tail wagging a mile a minute, a silly smile across his face, Wortox couldn’t agree faster; he loved Master, trusted him with anything! A life without worry was paradise; he’d be happy to obey!
A tug to the neck, and with a PING! Wortox broke out into the biggest grin that had ever crossed his face.
Kaa chuckled as he scratched his pet’s chin; Wortox was certainly a cute one. It was sad how he saw eating souls; sadder yet how he struggled for control. Happily hypnotized, he wouldn’t have to worry; no more harming anything he didn’t want to. It was always nice when he could solve a pet’s problems.
The snake looked to the sky, and gulped as he saw the sun set.
Occasionally, taking his time had its drawbacks.
A homicidal maniac in the darkness usually wasn’t one of them.
He really hoped Wortox had a torch.
I’m pretty sure this is the first picture of him hypnotized. Hopefully I do him justice; writing in rhyme is hard!
