Mariah (the deer) is feeling low about her body image so her mate Ferra comes in to comfort her. I cannot count how many times I have come across some beautiful lady who has a real low self-image when it comes to her body, I think it is practically a requirement or something, and personally it saddens me to see this so much, especially when I personally think the same lady is absolutely gorgeous, but convincing them that you really are being honest or sincere and not just 'being nice' is harder then hell. I tell you now, I am being sincere.
Not all of us like the 'supermodel look' anyway, I know it definitely isn't a personal favorite of mine.
I think I had Mariah and Ferra together for some 10 years or more now, I should have them marry or something, but people are likely to interpret that as a political statement.

Let them marry and let it be a political statement, it would be sweet :)
Marketing to women has historically been about emphasizing image to the point of making women feel bad about their image. This way they can market products that would 'boost' that self esteem.
Unfortunately the real images of beauty have been perverted for millenia and nobody is likely to accept them. After all if they did then people with bad attitudes wouldn't be very popular.

This is such a heartfelt picture ^^ Having two pretty ladies there doesn't hurt either. :D
Some people do need others to tell them they look nice. I wouldn't blame it on society; I'd just say that some people need support from others to feel good about themselves and learn to appreciate how they look, you know? I think that's what this shows. :)

*scratches his head* Political statement you say? Well I say this: Let them think what they want. I have always given my views on things, and it always comes down to the same thing. Preference. I just prefer to let people do what they want to keep themselves happy.
As for Mariah, she's beautiful just as she is. And yes, I understand how some people think they "Don't" look good, I'm similar in a way. But I will always just be me. *smiles* I love how this came out, it's rich in color and emotion. Keep up the good work!

The li'l doe looks damn fine to me.
Now you see you can't have them marry because seeing happy gay couples will somehow make straight couples value their marriage less. *blah*blah*
A political statement? Yeah it's a statement about civil rights. Not much different than the end of anti-miscegenation laws really. And hey, it would be an interspecies union too. Predator and prey relationships are hot.

If you don't want the headaches that political statements can cause, I don't blame you. It's your choice, whether you want to fight that battle or not.
Anywho... wonderful work. I totally agree with your statements about woman and their self-consciousness. It's maddening as a guy. We're just happy that there are woman around at all =)

I love this picture. I understand how hard it is to tell women that they are beautiful and make them know that you are sincere, being a woman with some slight body image issues myself. It's really hard to not think that someone is just trying to get you to shut up or something.
Anyway, I love this. Thank you. <3

I'm glad I stumbled across your gallery....if for nothing but this picture. The sentiment behind it, the meaning and just the whole bit. It .... is very true, very sad and yet sweet when the comforting part happens. I know that feeling, on both ends of the spectrum. This is beautiful... absolutely beautiful. Great job.
Such a beautiful story in so few panels with no need for words. I'm glad you got the point across without dialogue because this scene is all about "body language." This is my favorite piece of your work so far. I agree with the thought that the idealized supermodel look is overrated (and in my opinion, highly unattractive). This moment shared by Mariah and Ferra is so beautiful.

I don't know if you don't like comments on submissions a year old or older, but I agree with your understanding on women not understanding that they are beautiful. The thing that's sadder is if they never had a firm foundation, whether religious or earthly, to give them a sense of meaning anyway, which makes it impossible for them to believe their beautiful.
(Please don't get angry with me for writing this short story to go along with you're picture, its actually how I show how much I love a piece of art. Also, since you have very few males in your art work I've decided for this little story there are no males in this universe.)
It was five'o'clock and Ferra had just turn on the TV to watch Top Gear when Mariah came walking in after her doctor's appointment. The young deer seemed to be in another world a thousand miles away as she walked by her mate with out even a hello.
"Hey sweetie how was Dr. Yushi? Anything wrong with the baby?" Asked Ferra, concerned about how her wife was acting.
"What?" Responded Mariah as her mind snaped back to this reality. "Oh no, she said everything was fine. I'm just a little tired and going to lie down for bit."
"Are you sure? I just turned on Top Gear and its the one were they send a Mini off a ski ramp with a rocket."
"Yes Ferra I'm sure."
Ferra was now very concerned, Mariah loved Top Gear as much as she did and even if the deer was tired she would have just laid her head on the fox's lap and fall asleep there. So after making up her mind Ferra got up off the couch and follow Mariah into the bed room. She found her wife stripped of everything but her under wear, hands on her three month old baby bump, and her worried eyes fixated on that part of her reflection in the mirror.
"So what are you thinking about?" Asked Ferra from the door way.
"When I was waiting for the doctor, there was a magazine with an article about hybrid offspring from carnivore and herbivore parents and that they often suffer from digestive problems and die days after birth. So are we sure were doing the right thing? What if our child is just going to be in pain? Should we bring a child into the world if she is just going to die days later? Even if she does survive, what if she has to spend the rest of her life in constant pain?"
(Going to finish this later, but please let me know what you think)
