The comic's pretty self-explanatory.

The purpose of the talk is to show how "doing your homework" helps in lending believability to a character. I knew just about zip about hyenas when I created Kathy, and over the years I've done the research and discovered that (1) I got just about everything wrong about hyenas, (2) hyenas are far more complex and fascinating than you can imagine, and (3) every fact you learn about hyenas will be superseded by some new observation, because the field of hyena research is dynamic and the observers are constantly discovering new things about them.
I use the research to create the Crocutan culture. It's helped me with a very complex bit of world-building. And yet just when I hang an important plot point on a "fact," someone has to go and say, "No, it's not really the way we believed it was."
Sometimes it's helpful, like when they reported that hyena society is NOT strictly matriarchal, and that the son of a matriarch can, and does, assume leadership of the clan. Hello, Freddy, vice president and sole heir of Kruger Industries.
Sometimes it backs up a plot point, like finding out the other night that the mostly nocturnal striped hyena females often share their territory with several males. And there we have Madam Jade, a "lady of the evening" if ever there was one.
And sometimes it's confusing, like "Hyenas do not bring food back to the den site for their young." Yet "Den sites can be found by looking for large numbers of bones lying around."
In any case, spotted hyenas are absolutely amazing animals, and the more you learn about them, the more interesting they become!
