Some quick color on a couple of clothing design practice pics I did at FurFright. I love costuming my characters.

I would refer to my wife as a hardcore dilettante of fashion: a lifelong admirer and ardent student, but never provided the opportunity to really get into the industry. I am quite the same way with cars. She collects Barbies the same way I collect 1/18th-scale model automobiles.
In any event I might offer some description off the bat:
Poundcakes is wearing an asymmetrical printed leotard with a bellowed, tiered sleeve. I can't tell from her saucy pose if it's attached or not. A one-shoulder cape can also be seen. She is also "catwalking" appropriately (footsteps overlap as she's walking).
Ms. Mouse is wearing a full, pleated skirt with a "V" waist, and an asymmetrical leotard top with a gloved sleeve.
I also enjoy dressing characters up this way. One of the fun surprises of my fav old-school comic-books, DC's Legion of Super Heroes, was seeing how the super-powered adventurers from the 30th Century dressed in the street-clothes a thousand years hence, when not on-duty and in full costume.

At one point, I toyed with the notion that most actual clothing is obsolete, and everyone just projects "virtual" clothing through the telepathic/holographic Lightsphere. But that seemed to be pushing things a bit. Everyone's clothed, although there's some artificial projected tweaking going on(e.g. King Poncron's "crown").
Unless you had some ubiquitous, utterly uninterruptible power source, it could get dicey that way, yes. On the other hand who's to say some don't project unusual animations or effects onto their attire, or entire ensembles as you said, or a whole different self entirely using the Lightsphere?
