Hm, well, I've always seen art as being the ability to portray whatever you want to portray as truthfully to your mind's eye(, ear, or eye's eye in the case of realism) as possible!
That being said, one shouldn't draw (or play) to improve, but for the love of art. Improving is a symptom, so if you play tonnes, you get good whether it's your aim or not. Hobby or profession. ;)

I agree, but I'll explain just to be overtly clear (and as a result come off as a strange elitist weirdo)..
The art to me is the expressed idea and emotion (in this case Calico licking the syrup), not the finely formed shapes (does the tongue look like a tongue to everyone on the planet?). But of course you'll get better at the latter by doing the former whether you care or not! Aaaagh, I can't stop it! *Shrieks.*
Oh, and I don't take the drawing that seriously. Though I go about music similarly, so I don't think it's even related. Technique just isn't so important to me I guess..
