If you happen to be in the underground city of Dante, hopefully as a visitor and not as a resident, climb the tallest building and scan the "horizon" until you see the orange glow. No, that will not be the famous factories.
You are glancing at the landfill known as Dante's Hole. Not many know about it, and the locals would like to keep it that way, but it is a site to behold.
In it robots and androids that are broken, outdated, or simply unloved are thrown. Some still functional enough that will try to find a way to go on with their lives, living in the dump. Others may not have the opportunity; which are the lucky ones is up to discussion.
In the middle of the Dump there is a lava river, the same river that powers Dante and its factories; the Dump was built so slowly but surely everything reaches the river.
On the top of the high walls guard towers make sure none of those abandoned robots make it out. Or charge visitors to operate the guns and see if they can hit one of those machines.
Into this hole of despair, the third and last prototype of the Mireille project was thrown, deactivated. The project was scraped as useless and the engineers decided it was not worth to cannibalize her/its parts for other projects. Superstition maybe?
But, something happened. As the Mk3's sarcophagus rolled down the junk-filled steep slopes, the constant banging against the junk shorted something and activated Mk3.
Now she is left to figure out what to do next. One of her first thoughts was, "what did I do for them to throw me away?" That feeling of rejection and abandonment will haunt her for quite a while.
I did not think I would draw a scene from her origins, but tonight I just needed to do it. And, I think it turned up decent enough not to be hidden in the scraps.
