- Having a companion/partner is a requirement for gaining a permit, usually a regular paladin.
- An oath is required to abstain from the avenger/vigilante practices found on dark paladins, companions are meant to support them in keeping this oath.
- Gray Paladins keep their supernatural boons, such as advanced perception and deduction abilities
- Gray Paladins keep their flaws, such as insomnia, requiring them to meditate to substitute sleep and sudden bursts of aggression, which now must be handled with care
