Oooooh wow. Okay I´m really happy to say that the first day of our remote deep sea expedition and we are off with an amazing start!
short uodate on the crew, before i get too far into our findings just yet. Everyone is in high spirits, and the researcher crew on the outpost
and our crew are getting along well. Even Blackchurch has loosened up just a tiny bit, though I am still...I dunno. keeping an eye on him.
Neil and Marie and a bunch of the others, of course, had to take out the small speeding boats for a race. Luckily no one got hurt, tho they did get told off by the leading researcher of the ocean outpost for possibly disrupting running research and studies. I...cant blame them though. while racing potentially deadly machinery accross
the sea is not exactly my type of fun, a lot of the noin researcher crew are mostly on standby, and even if you have something to do ...sometimes letting loose is the only thing really resetting your head from all those data and spreadsheets.
now. on to the fun part.
not even 2 hours into our deep sea dive, the drone picked up on a Flashtail! while these creatures are not really rare, they are quite secretive and ´camera shy´ this individual however gave us quite a show as it first tried to ´lure´ the drone, but after it became aware that it was not in fact something to eat, it started to almost playfully prod it with its forelimbs, and even, and this is I think undocumented behavior, started a series of timed flashes from the dorsal spots towards the drone,
a behavior only reserved for communication within their pods. After a while, it seemed to grow bored of its new plaything and drifted off, but this was as interesting to witness as it was amusing.
Flashtails are 6 -8 feet long creatures that have an array of fascinating features. for one, they are the only communal deep sea predator we are aware of, living in fairly big pods.
They have a complex social hirachy and communicate by flashing their spots and tail in rythmic patterns. their long hind limbs hint at them being descendents from a land dwelling creature, but instead of losing them, they use them to anchor and perch themselves on crevasses and under water cliffs. They are ambush predators and wait on their perches, completely motionless, until prey swims nearby. They do hunt in pairs on occasion and can bring down bigger prey than they would attack on their own. Their jaw has no skin, which allows them to let it shoot out and snap shut on smaller prey much more efficiently. their eyes are wll camouflaged beneath their second face marking, which lead to the belief that they where blind for quite some time. one of their most fascinating features is their muscular tail. if they are in danger, and occasinally while hunting, they use all of the light organs along their tailfins at once, creating a pretty impressive, brilliantly white flash. while this would not do much to us, to creatures that live in near absolute darkness this is positively blinding, which allows the flashtail to make a swift escape or an attack.
They are, as creepy as they look, quite misunderstood intelligent beings. Maybe we will see more of them as the exploration goes on
