It also reminds me that I really need to sit down and watch Utena. It's been like, 25 years, at this point, since I first became aware of it? What am I still waiting for. It's free on YouTube.

That's probably a good attitude to have, regarding your experience and skill, I think.
Nadesico is primarily a super robot/mecha anime, a bit between the two? There's also a lot of just living on a large spaceship stuff, since they do. It's got fun and drama and heart. The setting and story are really weird, and become more weird as it goes on, in both good and bad ways.
The optional film that comes afterward is kind of a downer though. For whatever reason they decided that after the events of the anime, the main protagonist did not live happily ever after at all. I really hope it's non-canon or something like that.
